Inaugural Osseointegration Day taking place this Monday – 3rd May

Neoss together with The Brånemark Osseointegration Center are proud to present the 1st annual Osseointegration Day on May 3rd, Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark’s 92nd birthday.

The initiative was developed by Barbro K Brånemark together with the The Association of Brånemark Osseointegration Centers and Dr. Robert Gottlander, in tribute to Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark and his innovations and inventions that continue to improve many lives around the world.

The principles of Osseointegration, a term founded by Professor Brånemark after his important breakthrough in the 1950s when he discovered that bone could integrate with titanium components, are the foundation for countless clinical applications.

Dr. Robert Gottlander, CEO of Neoss, said: “Barbro Brånemark and I are very pleased that the idea is now coming alive. Our intention is to have something every year to remember P-I and celebrate his birthday on May 3rd. We would not have been able to do this without the support from The American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), Dental Tribune International (DTI) and The European Association for Osseointegration (EAO). A special thanks to them.”

This year’s event will be a webinar where Professor Tomas Albrektsson, a long-time colleague and friend of Professor Brånemark, will give a presentation on Osseointegration and its fundamental significance for modern implant dentistry.

Registration is now open for the 1st Osseointegration Day and can be done here https://dtstudyclub.com/webinar/the-first-global-osseointegration-day/

About The Brånemark Osseointegration Center

The Brånemark Osseointegration Center (BOC) in Gothenburg, Sweden, was founded 1989. BOC’s primary mission was to provide treatment for patients with severe oral, maxillo-facial and orthopedic impediments. A thorough appreciation of tissue handling, biological processes and patient care have developed into fundamental principles, which together with specially designed components and instruments have come to be the basic concept of Osseointegration. New dental survey of children highlights stark inequalities in England

A dental survey of three-year-olds in England has revealed stark oral health inequalities within England. The Oral Health Foundation, a leading oral health charity, believe community water fluoridation holds the key to bridging the gap and are calling on the government to act.

The report investigated nearly 20,000 three-year-olds from across England and found more than one-in-ten (10.7%) already have tooth decay.  On average, each child had three decayed teeth.

The survey also highlights regional differences amongst young children. Three-year-olds living in the Yorkshire and Humber are more than twice as likely to experience tooth decay (14.7%) than children living in the East of England (6.7%).

Dr Ben Atkins, President of the Oral Health Foundation, believes these statistics highlight an urgent need to address the oral health of children in this country and would like the government to do more.

Dr Atkins says: “These statistics are worrying indeed, especially when looking at the stark regional differences. The last survey of this nature was carried out in 2013 and since then very little progress has been made. This stagnation is due to a lack of action and clear direction from government, both at a local and national level, when it comes to addressing oral health inequalities in the UK.

“As a charity, we believe that community water fluoridation holds the key to improving the oral health of children up and down the country. Under new NHS reform plans announced earlier this year, the government pledged to take back control of community water fluoridation in order to make the process of implementing schemes both more efficient and less costly.

“We need to hold the government accountable for this and hope that in years to come we will see more and more community water fluoridation schemes.”

Fluoride has been researched extensively for decades now and has been found time and time again to be very effective in protecting teeth from decay and erosion. When added into the water supply studies have shown it can reduce tooth decay by up to 35%.

The charity believes water fluoridation would be especially effective for those living in more deprived areas where access to dental care may be limited.

The report also revealed that children living in the most deprived areas of the country were almost three times as likely to have experience of tooth decay (16.6%) as those living in the least deprived areas (5.9%).

Dr Ben Atkins concludes that, whilst we wait to see improvements made, everyone can take steps to better their oral health by following a strong oral health routine at home.

Dr Atkins says: “There is still a lot of work to be done when it comes to addressing oral health inequalities in this country. However, while we strive towards that goal, we would encourage everyone, including children,  to brush their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes twice a day.  This, along with cleaning in between your teeth daily, can set you and your children up with a healthy smile for life.”

ADG Chair welcomes new report calling for ‘’Armed Forces style” campaign to recruit more people into healthcare

Neil Carmichael, Chair of the Association of Dental Groups (ADG) has added his support to recommendations from a new report published today calling for a well-funded “Armed Forces” style recruitment campaign to inform and encourage people into the full range of healthcare careers, including dentistry.

The report also recommends that the Government’s central funds for “levelling up” should include a role for healthcare to reduce the nation’s regional health disparities.

Last month the publication of Public Health England’s report on “Oral health inequalities in England” revealed stark variations between regions in oral health and highlights an emerging “north/south” divide. Lying behind these inequalities is a growing recruitment crisis in the parts of the country that need NHS dentistry the most.

The ADG has already called for an increase in the number of UK training places for dentists and incentives for NHS dentists to move to areas with poorer access to dentistry such as Yorkshire and Lincolnshire coastlines, but also the South coast around the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and in Cornwall. In the short term, overseas recruitment which makes up nearly a fifth of registered dentists, and mutual recognition of qualifications of overseas dentists should be streamlined.

Neil Carmichael, Chair of the ADG, said: “The Government has recognised the need to recruit more doctors and nurses, but we need more than this. As the NHS integrates care systems a long term workforce plan for the whole healthcare workforce is required; this report makes a strong case for a recruitment strategy.

“NHS dentistry provision is suffering from acute recruitment problems in many areas of the country the Government wishes to level up. Good health enables an individual to participate fully in society and must be a part of levelling up the UK. A national recruitment drive for the whole sector highlighting the opportunities in many parts of the country for those who want to make a difference is part of delivering this.”

GDC comments on first results from UK-REACH study relating to Covid-19 and healthcare workers

Responding to the publication of the first results from the UK-REACH study, which found Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy in 23% of healthcare workers, General Dental Council Executive Director, Strategy, Stefan Czerniawski, said:

“We encourage all dental professionals to be vaccinated as an important step in protecting their patients, their communities – and of course – themselves. This research shows that most healthcare workers – including dental professionals – recognise that vaccines are safe and effective, but that a minority remain hesitant. It’s important to understand the reasons for that so that concerns can be addressed, and take-up encouraged.”

The United Kingdom Research study into Ethnicity And Covid-19 outcomes in Healthcare workers (UK-REACH) study is the largest and most comprehensive research project assessing the risk of Covid-19 for 18,000 clinical and non-clinical staff. It was launched after growing evidence showed how people from ethnic minority backgrounds had double the risk of severe Covid-19 infection compared to that of the White population.

The research is jointly funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and supported by the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre – a partnership between Leicester’s Hospitals, the University of Leicester and Loughborough University.

The study is supported by the major national professional regulatory bodies, including the General Medical Council (GMC), Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), General Dental Council (GDC), General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and General Optical Council (GOC).

Czerniawski added: “We have recently updated our vaccination guidance for dental professionals and employers which we encourage everyone working in dentistry to read. We will continue to seek opportunities to promote as wide a vaccination take-up as possible and to support the important work of the UK-REACH study.”

What does the ‘super deduction’ mean for dental practices?

The Chancellor unveiled a so-called super deduction first year capital allowance of 130% in the recent budget. This temporary break is available for new qualifying plant and machinery purchased by companies between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2023.

This is the first time that the government has introduced a rate of capital allowances relief that exceeds 100%, with few exclusions in terms of the kinds of plant and machinery for which it can be used to make it an attractive measure.

In practical terms this means that if a company spends, say, £10,000 in eligible expenditure, they may claim a deduction against their taxable profits of £13,000. Since the rate of corporation tax is 19%, this is a potential tax saving of £2,470 (19% of £13,000) that would not otherwise have been available.

Whilst the capital allowances legislation does not define ‘plant’ or ‘machinery’, ‘apparatus’ such as dental chairs and other dental equipment, essential in order to practice dentistry, would be considered as plant and machinery for the purposes of the relief.

Stephen Price, Managing Director of Belmont, commented: “Given the limited lifespan of the tax break, companies should start planning now as there’s no better time to invest in new equipment”.

Polegate Dental Practice in East Sussex sold to first-time buyer through Christie & Co

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, has announced the sale of Polegate Dental Practice in East Sussex.

Polegate Dental Practice is a three-surgery NHS practice located in the beautiful East Sussex town of Polegate. After being under the same ownership for over 20 years, the owner/Principal decided to sell so that he could retire and spend more time with his grandchildren.

After a short period of marketing which resulted in multiple viewings and offers, a sale was agreed to an Associate buying his first dental practice. The buyer was attracted to the strong mix of NHS and private income and the opportunity to grow the practice going forward.  The sale demonstrates the continued strength of the market and the high demand from first-time buyers keen to acquire.

Tony Walker, Business Agent at Christie & Co, who handled the sale, comments, “I am delighted that the sale of Polegate Dental has completed. Our client is delighted to hand over the practice and his patients to an excellent buyer who will continue the first-class clinical care of the patients and grow the practice in the future.”

Polegate Dental Practice was sold at an undisclosed price.

Dr Eirik Salvesen to present at the ITI Congress UK & Ireland 2021

Renowned for its commitment to evidence-based dentistry and raising clinical and educational standards in implant dentistry, the ITI (International Team for Implantology) has become a global authority in the field. As such, Straumann is delighted to be a partner for the ITI Congress UK & Ireland 2021, being held in the stunning City of Edinburgh this October.

This year’s event has been designed to accommodate and inspire all members of the dental implant team. There will be lectures dedicated to dental nurses, dental hygienists/therapists and young dentists, all in addition to the main two-day programme running on October 1-2. An exceptional line-up of speakers from the UK and abroad have been brought together to share their expert insight into a vast array of traditional, new and emerging topics. Among them will be Dr Eirik Salvesen discussing “Contemporary dental implant design in every day practice”.

A Specialist in Periodontology from Norway, Dr Salvesen is the Chief Clinical Development Officer at Oris Dental and the Executive Director of the Oris Academy, which is a Centre of Excellence for Straumann. A global lecturer and tutor, Dr Salvesen will be sharing his extensive experience by discussing how implant design has evolved to meet the demands of the modern implant market. Covering case selection criteria for immediate protocols and the clinical steps required for success in such situations, Dr Salvesen outlines the topics he will be discussing during his session:

“I will explore the development of implant design to enhance the possibilities for immediate treatment protocols, as well as how we can reduce invasiveness and treatment time for our patients. I’ll highlight the importance of correct case selection in order to help clinicians know what to do, when to do it and how, for the best possible outcomes.”

As with any innovation in dentistry, there are challenges that need to be overcome before clinicians can realise the exceptional treatment outcomes available thanks to contemporary implant design. Dr Salvesen continues:

“The continuous digital transformation of our industry makes our patients ever more aware of the possibilities that implant treatment can offer. The challenge here is to educate them and properly manage their expectations.

“In addition, new implant designs offer new possibilities within immediate treatment protocols, as well as simplified clinical procedures, when compared to more conventional protocols. However, there are a lot of different systems, a lot of marketing and a lot of hype about immediacy out there. The challenge is to get on top of the information to understand the potential of this modality as well as the realistic limitations.

“I hope to help clinicians successfully overcome some of these issues by showing the latest developments from Straumann, as a system designed to solve the immediacy challenges. A such, I hope delegates will leave the session with a greater understanding of the benefits of immediacy, both for the patient and the clinician. This will help delegates to better position themselves in an ever-changing and competitive market, while offering their patients state-of-the-art, scientifically-documented and up-to-date treatment protocols.”

The ITI Congress UK & Ireland will provide an unparalleled opportunity for clinicians involved with dental implants and their teams to refine their skills and broaden their knowledge. There will also be various networking and socialising opportunities for all to enjoy – especially after the long period of isolation made necessary by the pandemic. The Straumann party on Friday night is just one event to look forward to – the reputation of which proceeds it!

“The ITI Congress will present a solid programme with renowned speakers, all hosted by the largest organisation for implant dentistry – the ITI,” adds Dr Salvesen. “For sure, after COVID-19 and all the restrictions we have faced, meeting peers again in person will be extremely valuable.

“I’m honoured to be invited and truly hope to see as many as possible of my dear colleagues at the event – it’s a great chance to satisfy the professional needs for knowledge and for peer interactions.”

This is but a snapshot of what you can expect from the ITI Congress UK & Ireland this October. There will also be a dedicated trade exhibition for delegates to find out more about industry-leading systems and technologies, with demonstrations and product experts available for all.
