Henry Schein UK participates in “Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge” to raise funds for mental health charities

On 9 September 2023, Team Schein Members from Henry Schein Dental, Henry Schein Medical, Optident, BioHorizons Camlog, and the Henry Schein One brands Software of Excellence and Dentally, came together for a charitable outdoor challenge. Their mission was to raise £7,000 in support of health charities.

In the challenge, 25 team members completed a 24-mile walk round trip that included 1,585 meters of ascent. The three peaks are Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough.

The Team Schein Members raised funds for three dedicated charities: Mind, which provides advice and support to anyone experiencing mental health problems, Dementia UK, a charity that helps the families of people suffering from dementia, and Naomi House & Jacksplace, a children’s hospice that provides care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions. These charities have had a significant impact on many of those who walked the three peaks and have relentlessly supported many other Team Schein Members and families affected by mental diseases in the country.

“Overcoming this great challenge wasn’t easy, but we knew we were doing it for great causes,” said James Salter, Corporate Social Responsibility Co-Chair, Henry Schein UK. “We are deeply thankful to everyone who contributed to our fundraising page. Those contributions will make a difference to the lives of many people affected by mental health issues and children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions.”

The Yorkshire Three Peak Challenge initiative is part of Henry Schein Cares, the company’s global corporate social responsibility programme. It stands on five pillars: empowering Team Schein to reach their potential, advancing health equity and expanding access to care for underserved communities, accelerating environmental sustainability, strengthening, and diversifying our supply chain, and maintaining strong ethical governance. Health care activities supported by Henry Schein Cares focus on four main areas: wellness, treatment, prevention, and education; capacity building; emergency preparedness and disaster response; and health system strengthening.

The Association of Dental Education in Europe, The European Dental Students’ Association and Henry Schein announce the winners of the “2023 Oral Health Professional Educators’ ‘Practice Green’ Awards” for Dental Schools and Societies

At the Association of Dental Education in Europe’s (ADEE) annual meeting on 25 August 2023, in Liverpool, the organisation – together with the European Dental Students’ Association (EDSA) and Henry Schein – announced the winners of the Oral Health Professional Educators’ ‘Practice Green©’ Awards, aimed to embed an ethos of sustainability within the education lifecycle for oral health professionals and within their educational and clinical practice settings.

ADEE President, Prof Pal Barkvoll, said: “ADEE is delighted with the quality of the submissions we received for this award. The initiatives of the faculties are to be applauded and show how many opportunities there are to create awareness already in health care education and to turn initiatives into action to practice green.”

EDSA President, Martha Adam, added: “It was great to see how the students were integrated into so many initiatives of the awards and how sustainability in health care becomes more and more embedded into the undergraduate curriculum.”

Faculty Campus Initiative

The University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, received an award for its campus wide initiatives which draw together core components of sustainability into everyday campus life for staff and students. The University submission clearly demonstrated it is actively taking steps to look at its impact on climate change and wider sustainable development. Since January 2020, the University has signed an accord committing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has developed a Sustainability Strategy, and launched a new Climate Plan setting in motion an aim to achieve net zero by 2035. With key activities encouraging reuse, repair, and circular economies, waste reduction, decarbonisation of its fuel and energy systems, sustainable travel solutions, and a wide array of educational offers for staff and students on sustainability, they are well on their journey to practice green.

Faculty Curriculum Initiative

The University of Malmö Faculty of Dentistry, Sweden, received an award for their commitment to integrating the concept of sustainability and sustainable practices within their undergraduate dental programmes to instil within students what these concepts mean and how they can practically apply such an ethos within their practice from graduation. The curriculum’s focus on prevention, use of technologies, and green products, and the encouragement of students to be agents for change was clearly demonstrated in the submission. Graduating informed students that will practice green is a clear aim of the faculty.

Faculty Procurement and Product Use Initiative

The Dundee School of Dentistry, United Kingdom, received the third award for demonstrating how local knowledge of systems and product usage combined with creativity and imagination can lead to meaningful changes in product usage, waste reduction and an embracing of a reuse, recycle philosophy that has an impact from a sustainable and financial perspective.

A special recognition for international collaboration towards sustainability

The panel decided to honor one additional initiative with a special recognition award. Kings College London Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences, United Kingdom, and its eight partner universities within the Circle U University AllianceUniversity of Vienna (Austria), UCLouvain (Belgium), Aarhus University (Denmark), Université Paris Cité (France), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany), Università di Pisa (Italy), University of Oslo (Norway), and University of Belgrade (Serbia) – were awarded for their international cooperation and knowledge sharing to address real change that has a sustainable impact. The collaborative project acknowledges that climate change is a global concern and as such they aim to reflect and act together on the consequences of climate change to have global impact level changes that lead to sustainable and green practices in both health care and education.

The Oral Health Professional Educators’ ‘Practice Green©’ award was named after Henry Schein’s recently launched global programme, Practice Green, designed to empower the health care community to positively impact the future of the planet by reducing the ecological footprint and promoting sustainability.

“We congratulate all winners for the amazing contribution to a more sustainable dental education and to a healthier future for all of us. I thank all faculties participating in this initiative for sharing the great initiatives they are advancing and for showcasing the important role that University Dental Schools take in helping to establish the foundation for a more sustainable dentistry”, said Andrea Albertini, CEO of Henry Schein’s International Distribution Group.

During the ADEE annual meeting, ADEE also announced that the ADEE Graduating European Dentist (GED) Core Curriculum document has recently been updated to reflect competencies in the area of sustainable practice. Going forward, ADEE member schools will increasingly address these competencies in their curriculum. The GED is a consensus curriculum aimed at providing all faculties with a core resource in the devising of learning outcomes so as to enable an effective curriculum and competent graduating early career practitioners.

BioHorizons Camlog has established itself as one of the leading suppliers of premium dental implant systems, restorative components, a comprehensive line of biologics products and digital solutions which helps dentists to provide patients with the optimum treatment.

BioHorizons Camlog will also host two workshops at EAO.

On Friday, September 29, 2023, Prof. Daniel Rothamel (Germany) will speak on allogeneic bone substitute materials for bone regeneration in his workshop. He will demonstrate fundamentals and techniques of hard tissue augmentation with allografts based on patient cases and hands-on exercises. The practical exercises on the model include the application of allogeneic materials in particulate form, block augmentation, and the shell technique.

Later that day, Dr. Robert Oretti (United Kingdom) will present the concept of open healing and demonstrate options for its application in modern implant dentistry. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn to choose between the different treatment options, focusing on the steps to achieve passive closure over the bone graft without compromising the muco-gingival line.

Between the two workshops, Prof. Rothamel and Dr. Oretti will provide insight into allogeneic bone substitute materials in an industry forum, as there is growing evidence that allogeneic grafts may be a safe alternative to autologous grafts in implant therapy. In this forum, they will be presenting new data and therapeutic concepts on allografts, indicating the potential clinical relevance of these materials in implant dentistry.

Henry Schein donates health care products to support Special Olympics Healthy Athletes screenings at Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023

Henry Schein, Inc. – the world’s largest provider of health care solutions to office-based dental and medical practitioners – will support the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® screenings at the Special Olympics World Games, that take place from 17 to 25 June 2023 in Berlin, Germany, by donating a range of oral health and medical products essential to overall health and wellness.Healthy Athletes programme offers health screenings and education to participating Special Olympics athletes with the goal of promoting healthy lifestyle choices and identifying problems that may need additional follow-up care.

Henry Schein has supported Special Olympics since 2018 donating essential health care products to support programmes in Canada, Germany, Israel, Jamaica, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Through this partnership, the Company has been named a Special Olympics health provider partner.

According to Special Olympics, an organization recognised by the International Olympic Committee, people with intellectual disabilities are frequently among the most medically vulnerable populations in any country, despite severe need and higher health risks.

“Thanks to our long-term partnership with Henry Schein and their continuous contribution of health care products to our Healthy Athletes programme, we were able to strengthen our ability to provide the high-quality health screenings that our athletes need while also drawing attention to the health issues faced by people with intellectual disabilities,” said Annemarie Hill, Special Olympics Senior Vice President, Global Health Operations. “Henry Schein and Special Olympics share the belief that all people deserve quality health care regardless of their differences.”

Henry Schein’s donations will be used during the Special Olympic World Games for screenings in five of the Healthy Athletes disciplines, including Special Smiles, which provides athletes with comprehensive oral health care information, free dental screenings, instructions on proper brushing and flossing techniques, and if needed, a referral to a dental care provider at home trained to treat people with intellectual disabilities. Henry Schein’s donations also support Fit Feet (podiatry), FUNFitness (physical therapy), Health Promotion (prevention and nutrition), and Strong Minds (emotional health).

“Advancing health equity and expanding access to care for those in need closely aligns with our belief in the power of wellness, prevention, treatment, and education,” said Jennifer Kim Field, Chief Sustainability Officer at Henry Schein. “We believe that overall health and oral health are closely connected. Knowing that people with intellectual disabilities are often at higher risk for additional health limitations, we are encouraged that this programme provides convenient access to optimum health care. We are honored to once again join with Special Olympics and support a programme that enables health professionals to help set athletes with intellectual disabilities on the path to a lifetime of good overall health.”

Since its inception in 1997, Healthy Athletes has delivered over two million free health screenings and trained over 300,000 health care professionals, clinical volunteers, and students in using adapted screening protocols and in communicating effectively with people with intellectual disabilities. These trainings also aid in building the health care community’s capacity to serve the needs of people with intellectual disabilities outside of Special Olympics events, as providers take these skills back to their practices and provide higher quality health care to people with intellectual disabilities – not just Special Olympic athletes – in their communities.

The donations to Special Olympics Healthy Athletes are an initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the company’s global corporate social responsibility programme.
