Henry Schein UK partners with The Hygiene Bank to help tackle hygiene poverty

Henry Schein Dental and Henry Schein Medical UK have teamed up with The Hygiene Bank, a nationwide organisation that provides people in need with hygiene products across the UK, to help tackle hygiene poverty. Hygiene necessities were donated, sorted, packed, and delivered to three local organisations by Henry Schein UK.

More than one in five people in the UK live in poverty – 14.5 million people according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Access to basic hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap, is limited for many of these individuals. Therefore, Team Schein Members (TSMs) at Henry Schein UK came together to donate 723.34kg personal and household products for people who need it most.

Members of Henry Schein UK’s Corporate Social Responsibility Committee at its Gillingham Head Office stockpiled the products, creating packages tailored for different members of the community. Once sorted and packed, committee members along with Emma Thomas, Project Coordinator at The Hygiene Bank Medway, delivered the range of items (toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, soap, laundry detergent, and more) to The Nigerian Community Association (Kent and Medway), Warren Wood Primary Academy (Rochester), and a voluntary organisation in Medway. The hygiene items are set to be given to refugees, domestic abuse victims, and local underserved families who need immediate support.

“The Hygiene Bank Medway is based on community involvement and collaboration. Working with the Henry Schein UK team highlights just how amazing things can happen when we all pull together,” said Ms. Thomas. “Hygiene poverty is often described as a hidden crisis in today’s society, but by working locally in partnership with Henry Schein UK, we hope to strengthen community cohesion by raising awareness that although hygiene poverty is close to home, it is also a problem that we can tackle together. Thanks again to the Henry Schein UK team for their support, and we sincerely hope it is just the start of our amazing partnership.”

This initiative aligns with Henry Schein Cares, Henry Schein’s corporate social responsibility programme. Henry Schein Cares stands on five pillars: empowering Team Schein to reach their potential, advancing health equity and expanding access to care for underserved communities, accelerating environmental sustainability, strengthening, and diversifying our supply chain, and maintaining strong ethical governance. Health care activities supported by Henry Schein Cares focus on four main areas: (1) wellness, treatment, prevention, and education; (2) capacity building; (3) emergency preparedness and disaster response; and (4) health system strengthening.

“Henry Schein UK is pleased to join forces with The Hygiene Bank to help make a difference in the lives of individuals in our local community,” said Vikki Goodall, Senior Director and General Manager, Henry Schein Dental UK. “The reality is that millions of people across the UK are lacking access to basic human necessities – something that many of us take for granted. Team Schein is grateful to the Hygiene Bank for giving us the opportunity to provide much needed items to very deserving people and families, and we look forward to continuing our partnership.”

Other Henry Schein offices also collected hygiene products and donated to them local banks, including locations in Cardiff, Derby, Ireland, and Ilkley.

Henry Schein Named to Fortune Magazine’s “Change the World” List

Henry Schein, Inc. (Nasdaq: HSIC) announced today that it has been named to FORTUNE® magazine’s “Change the World” list, an annual recognition of select companies that, through their work and initiatives, create positive social impact as part of their core business strategy.

Henry Schein was recognised for its leadership initiatives designed to advance health equity for individuals with disabilities, and in particular, engaging the Company’s key stakeholder relationships in support of this work. This is the third time the Company has been named to FORTUNE® magazine’s “Change the World” list. In 2018, Henry Schein was recognised for its efforts to expand access to oral health care for underserved populations around the world, and in 2020, the Company was recognised for its role as co-founder and private sector lead of the Pandemic Supply Chain Network.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 61 million people in the United States live with a disability. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are particularly vulnerable to poor oral health, and as a population have complex oral health care needs, according to a report from BMC Public Health. This disparity is due to various risk factors that people with IDD may experience, including barriers to accessing quality health care.

Henry Schein’s longstanding commitment to addressing the needs of the disability community includes the following activities, among others:

  • Catalyzing public-private partnerships to advocate for and increase access to oral health care for people with disabilities. Henry Schein co-founded and provides ongoing funding, in-kind support, and leadership to Project Accessible Oral Health, a 501(c)(3) charity that joins health care professionals, industry, community organisations, and policymakers to raise awareness about care gaps within the disability community. Care gaps include the fees paid to dental providers by third-party payers, which are inadequate for the time and facility requirements necessary to serve this population, resulting in a small portion of providers serving this population nationally. In addition, training of the oral health care team is not readily available throughout the oral health education system, nor does every school have adequate clinical facilities and faculty to achieve this goal.
  • Educating and training the primary health care community and future professionals. The Company partnered with the National Council on Disability to educate medical and dental professionals on how they can improve access to care for disabled patients, including skills for treating this population. Henry Schein also partnered with

Special Olympics International (SOI) to advance diversity and inclusion training, create a health care provider directory, and donate health care products in support of Special Olympics’ Healthy Athletes® free screening and education programmes at hundreds of events internationally. Finally, Henry Schein has engaged with members of the American Dental Education Association to develop the framework for a national curriculum to educate and train a new cohort of health professionals. The leaders of this movement include Dr. David Fray of the University of Texas Health Houston School of Dentistry, Dr. Allen Wong of the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, and Dr. Mark Wolff, Dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, along with other institutions that are actively disseminating courses.

  • Activating stakeholders and lawmakers to address oral health care inequities, increase dental care coverage, and improve reimbursement to providers. Henry Schein, along with the American Academy of Developmental Medicine & Dentistry, assembled a coalition of clinical and academic leaders and not-for-profit organisations to educate policymakers at the national and state level about the oral health needs of individuals with disabilities and the additional care expenses related to serving this population
  • Engaging clinicians and suppliers to design adaptive products and accessible dental offices. The Company collaborated with the National Council on Disability to advocate for the creation of American Dental Association standards for dental office design to better accommodate the needs of patients with disabilities, including a partnership with a national firm to design, layout, equip, and specify equipment and supplies for use in integrated health care programming to support patients with special needs.

“At Henry Schein, our work towards improving health equity and patient outcomes naturally encompasses our efforts for , given the large number of patients within this community and the substantial care gaps that persist,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. “From our earliest days, we have held ourselves accountable to the five constituencies that make up our ‘Mosaic of Success’ – our customers, suppliers, Team Schein Members, shareholders, and society at large – and this model of stakeholder engagement has, in turn, helped advance our business growth.

“We have long recognised that strong financial performance and service to the greater good are mutually reinforcing objectives. Being named to FORTUNE® magazine’s ‘Change the World’ list exemplifies our philosophy of building deep, trust-based relationships that further societal change and drive corporate success, and on behalf of the more than 22,000 Team Schein Members, we are honored to receive this distinguished recognition,” Mr. Bergman added.

As part of Henry Schein’s efforts to support individuals with disabilities, the Company also established a disability task force comprised of several business units within the Company. Additionally, Henry Schein announced plans to establish an Employee Resource Group (ERG) in 2023 for Team Schein Members with disabilities, building on the Company’s commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive workplace aligned with its Team Schein Values.

FORTUNE® magazine’s “Change the World” list celebrates companies and leaders that embrace corporate purpose and recognize how it can add value to business and society. FORTUNE® evaluates the companies by measurable social impact, business results, degree of innovation, and corporate integration. Henry Schein UK participates in ‘Back to School’ programme to help children in need return to the classroom

Henry Schein is celebrating the 25th year of its “Back to School” programme, which provides backpacks, school supplies, and more to support the back-to-school needs of underserved children and their families. Since the programme’s inception in 1998, the company has helped more than 65,000 children start a new school year with confidence.

This year, Team Schein Members at 34 locations, including 21 U.S. facilities and 13 international sites in five countries (Canada, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and United Kingdom) are donating backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 5,000 children. At each Henry Schein location, teams work with local social service agencies to identify participating children and their families. The “Back to School” programme is a flagship initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the company’s global corporate social responsibility programme.

“Over the past 25 years, the ‘Back to School’ programme has continued to grow and evolve, helping to meet the ever-changing needs of the communities in which we live and work,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. “Our inaugural programme served 175 children, and the Team Schein spirit has remained strong since the beginning, with Team Schein Members joining all over the world to help furnish children with the essentials needed to have a successful school year.

Back to School in the UK

Henry Schein UK provided 25 backpacks with school supplies to Bradfields Academy in Chatham, which aims to be a leading centre of excellence in the Special Education Sector where students can thrive and fully develop their cognitive, social and emotional skills in order to take a full, active and responsible role in their local community and beyond as Global Citizens and Ambassadors for students with disabilities.*)

“Bradfields Academy is extremely grateful to the team at Henry Schein for including our students in their ‘Back to School’ bags scheme,” said David Waters, Head of Bradfields Academy. “Due to the significant cost of living crisis, many of our families are extremely impacted, and with the rising cost of clothing and uniforms, not all are able to provide students with the basic equipment that we would expect them have. The scheme has provided many students with a school bag containing all the necessary equipment for an excellent start to the year. I, on behalf of the academy, would like to thank Henry Schein for this support and their ongoing support of the academy, and the trust we are part of. I am certain that the students and families will also be passing on their thanks in their own way.”

Mr. Waters added, “Whilst students who do not have the correct equipment would never be put at a disadvantage, there is always a sense of pride from the students that have their own. This pride is now shared by even more students. In turn, this is reflected in their application in lessons, and has a positive impact on their progress. The kindness and support from the Henry Schein team has ensured that even more students can display this.”

The backpacks were delivered to the school by Team Schein Members Wayne Fisher (Operations Assistant, Materials Handling), Shantel Jarrett (Receptionist and Administrative Assistant), and Dean Knight (Communications and Engagement Partner, HR).

“We are pleased to collaborate with Bradfields Academy to help their students have a successful academic year,” said Patrick Allen, Managing Director, Henry Schein Dental UK, Ireland, South Africa, and The Nordics. “Giving back to the communities we serve is the cornerstone of the Henry Schein culture, and we look forward to the ‘Back to School’ programme each year, because it provides our Team Schein Members with the opportunity to help make the first day of school enjoyable and stress-free for local students.”

How it all began

“The ‘Back to School’ programme began when Team Schein Members came together with an idea to help kids in need, under the leadership of Gerry Benjamin, our recently retired Chief Administrative Officer, who played an integral role in making the programme what it is today. ‘Back to School’ exemplifies our longstanding commitment to investing in initiatives that raise awareness about, and deliver benefits to, underserved populations within the communities where we operate, and we are especially pleased to celebrate its 25th year,” Mr. Bergman said.

Back to School #scheinchats

In the latest episode of #scheinchats, Henry Schein’s signature social media series, Dan LaRosa, Senior Manager of Team Schein and Community Services at Henry Schein, sat down with Fran Mellow, Division Director at Family Service League, New York, to discuss how the “Back to School” programme helps enhance access to essentials, why starting the school year off with confidence is important, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and what companies can do to build similar initiatives. Henry Schein Dental UK Team Schein Member completes 300-mile bike ride in support of the MIBREAST study at The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity

Jackie Cooper, Manager of Infection Protection and Control at Henry Schein Dental UK, rode 300 miles from London to Paris from 20 to 24 July 2022 to raise funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

A Common Thread

According to Cancer Research UK, there are around 55,900 new breast cancer cases in the UK every year, more than 150 every day (2016 – 2018). Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, accounting for 15 percent of all new cancer cases (2016 – 2018). Given this disease touches so many individuals throughout the country, Ms. Cooper was eager to support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. She signed up for the charity ride in 2019, which was then postponed due to COVID-19. During this time, she herself was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in May 2020.

Since her diagnosis, Ms. Cooper has had five surgeries as part of her treatment process. After undergoing a mastectomy, she received reconstruction surgery at The Royal Marsden in Chelsea, where the team helped guide her throughout her journey, making this initiative even more important to her. Ms. Cooper rode alongside 180 participants in the cycling challenge held by the charity, to help make a difference in the lives of people affected by cancer.

“Having been through breast cancer and reconstruction surgery, I wanted to give back and help other individuals who are going through the same thing,” said Ms. Cooper. “The team at The Royal Marsden was there with me every step of the way, helping me to understand my long-term arrangement. I felt it was my duty to reciprocate after all they had done for me. If I can help one person who is starting her reconstruction plan, then I feel like I’ve done my job.”

The Ride

All the funds collected during the four-day event went towards the MIBREAST study, which will allow patients to have their appearance captured after reconstructive surgery using a 3D-surface imaging system. These pictures can then be edited to show how the individual might look after surgery, which will help to enable more confident decisions about mastectomy and reconstruction. Additionally, this technology measures the shape of the breast which may help in surgical planning, reducing the need for later adjustment operations to improve symmetry.

Improving the Lives of Cancer Patients

The ride was hosted by the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, which raises money solely to support The Royal Marsden, a world-leading cancer centre. The charity provides funds across four vital areas: research, equipment, treatment, and patients environment, to help individuals with cancer. To help support cancer patients and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, individuals can take part in an event, fundraise, donate, or volunteer.

Doing Well by Doing Good

“We congratulate Jackie and all the participants who rode for such an incredible cause,” said Patrick Allen, Managing Director, Henry Schein Dental UK, Ireland, South Africa, and The Nordics. “At Henry Schein Dental UK, we believe in giving back to the communities in which we live and work, and this is the perfect example of Team Schein doing just that. We encourage our team to go out and ‘do good’ by actively volunteering and supporting charities. Our culture is built on the belief that every person is as important as the next, and we empower each Team Schein Member to embrace community service and outreach on a personal level.”

This initiative aligns with Henry Schein Cares, Henry Schein’s corporate social responsibility programme. Henry Schein Cares stands on five pillars: empowering Team Schein to reach their potential, advancing health equity and expanding access to care for underserved communities, accelerating environmental sustainability, strengthening, and diversifying our supply chain, and maintaining strong ethical governance. Health care activities supported by Henry Schein Cares focus on four main areas: (1) wellness, treatment, prevention, and education; (2) capacity building; (3) emergency preparedness and disaster response; and (4) health system strengthening.

Henry Schein advances ESG stewardship

Henry Schein has announced the publication of its 2021 Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report, titled “BOLD Leadership for a Healthier World.”

The Company’s 2021 Sustainability and CSR Report details work done over the past year to advance its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) stewardship, including expanded ESG disclosures, several distinct health equity initiatives, and continued collaborations with business partners and suppliers to help address climate change.

As part of the Company’s work to enhance its ESG transparency, Henry Schein reported for the first time on its sustainability efforts in 2021 in accordance with Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and Global Reporting Initiative Standards. The Company also issued its first Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures Report, outlining Henry Schein’s governance and related strategies to address climate risks and opportunities.

Among other work highlighted in the 2021 Sustainability and CSR Report, Henry Schein took the following steps to strengthen its ESG commitment:

  • Committed to increasing the diversity of all underrepresented groups in senior levels by improving the Company’s talent acquisition and organizational development practices, as well as by enhancing its compensation processes to better align with the Company’s strategic objectives. These efforts will help to enrich opportunities for all TSMs and better position the Company to achieve its overall business goals.
  • Signed the Business Ambition for 1.5°C Initiative, committing to set science-based targets to guide the pathway seeking to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, and joined the World Economic Forum Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders and the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Decarbonization of the Health Care Sector.
  • Advocated for the equitable distribution of health care services to underserved and underrepresented populations, donating more than $21.5 million in health care product and cash in 2021 through Henry Schein Cares and the Henry Schein Cares Foundation, Inc. to advance health equity in furtherance of the Company’s $50 million commitment to health equity announced last year.
  • Co-founded the Responsible Glove Alliance, an industry collaborative established with the mission to prevent, identify, and remediate forced labor in the Malaysian medical supply chain, and adopted additional advanced human rights compliance tools and initiatives.
  • Launched several new employee resources groups (ERGs) for Team Schein Members (TSMs), including the COLEGAS ERG for its Hispanic and Latin American TSMs and the elevASIAN ERG for Pan-Asian TSMs. The Company plans to launch an ERG for Military Veterans and members of the Armed Forces and their families, as well as an ERG for TSMs with Disabilities and their Allies.

Additionally, Henry Schein deployed a new Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) performance metric for all global directors and vice presidents, linking compensation with success in achieving the Company’s D&I goals, further reinforcing Henry Schein’s commitment to D&I in the workplace.

“Our commitment to the success of our stakeholders – our customers, TSMs, supplier partners, shareholders, and society at large – has long been the foundation of our purpose-driven approach to corporate citizenship and commercial engagement, and continues to inform our bold efforts to create a healthier world,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein, Inc. “Throughout our 90 years in business, we’ve faced many challenges as an industry and a society, and Team Schein remains determined to support our customers and our business through our robust stakeholder engagement model. Henry Schein will continue to pursue our higher ambition as a socially responsible and sustainable organization while giving back in times of crisis and doing our part to build a healthier future for all.”

Over the past decade, Henry Schein has further invested in its commitment to a higher ambition model of “ethical capitalism,” formalizing its ESG strategy into five focus areas: Empowering Team Schein, Advancing Health Equity, Accelerating Environmental Sustainability, Supply Chain Resilience, and Ethical Governance. Henry Schein Dental UK joins Dentaid and The MalDent Project

The initiative is to help increase access to dental care for under served communities in Malawi

Henry Schein Dental UK, along with the charity organisation Dentaid and the Scottish Government-funded international development project The MalDent Project, are helping to increase access to dental care for under served individuals in Malawi. As part of an ongoing initiative led by the MalDent project to build Malawi’s first purpose-built dental hospital and school, Henry Schein Dental UK, The MalDent Project, and Dentaid recently helped enhance two central hospitals in the community by repairing existing and installing new equipment in the dental departments and preparing dental chairs for installation in peripheral medical centres. The dental hospital and school will support Malawi’s new Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree programme at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.

Chris Cox from Henry Schein Dental UK, Stuart Bassham from Dentaid, and Jeremy Bagg from The MalDent Project and the University of Glasgow participated in a service trip to help enhance the equipment and materials available at the two central hospitals. At Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Blantyre, they repaired and maintained compressed air supplies by restoring electrical connections and renovating the floors throughout the treatment centre. At Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, they helped to upgrade the dental treatment, oral surgery, and clinical skills departments by repairing and servicing several existing units and installing new dental equipment. The team also visited Kamuzu University of Health Sciences to meet senior staff members and spend time with the dental students studying in Malawi.

“The reality is that with only a small number of dentists to serve an entire population, many individuals in Malawi lack proper dental care, a basic necessity that many of us take for granted,” said Chris Cox, Product Manager, Henry Schein Dental UK. “I’ve seen first-hand the complications that poor oral health can cause, and it is important that everyone has access to dental care. That is why I continue to support this cause in any way that I can, and I am honoured to have been able to contribute to this initiative.”

In support of Kamuzu Central Hospital, a dental chair was installed in the oral surgery theatre. Previously, all patients requiring oral surgical procedures had to lie flat, which hindered comfortable patient positioning and limited access for the dental team. The new unit has helped to make the treatment more effective and more comfortable for both the patient and the dentist. The dental chair, along with other equipment, was donated by Dentaid.

In addition to the dental chair installation, the following items were completed at Kamuzu Central Hospital:

  • Dental simulators were installed in the clinical skills department and existing simulators were serviced to keep them in good working order. This equipment will help the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences double the amount of pre-clinical students training in the Kamuzu Central Hospital at a time.
  • Hands-on user training was provided for the dental students, helping to build their knowledge of the equipment. Furthermore, these simulators are also used by dental therapy students from the neighbouring College of Health Sciences, adding to the educational value of the upgraded simulation facility.
  • Seven further treatment centres were serviced and prepared to be brought into rural community medical centres across the country and installed by the local biomedical engineers. This allows the health care providers to conduct more check-ups and preventive dental care for the community, without them having to travel great distances.
  • Henry Schein Dental UK also donated tools, spare parts, and service kits for the biomedical engineers to utilise moving forward.

“At Henry Schein, we have a long-standing commitment to advancing health equity and advocating for and raising awareness of the needs of under served communities who are disparately disadvantaged,” said Patrick Allen, Managing Director, Henry Schein Dental UK, Ireland, South Africa, and The Nordics. “Supporting the first purpose-built dental hospital and school in Malawi reflects our continued efforts to increase access to care for under served populations, and we are dedicated to being a catalyst for change to help improve access to quality, affordable health care.”

In addition to the maintenance projects, Henry Schein Dental UK is also helping to design a training programme for the biomedical engineers in Malawi to help address the need for enhancing dental equipment maintenance and repair skills in the community. In these various ways, Henry Schein Dental UK, Dentaid, and the MalDent Project, together with a new partner, Medical Aid International, are working together to positively impact the future of oral care in Malawi.

The MalDent Project is a collaboration between the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (formerly the University of Malawi College of Medicine) and the University of Glasgow Dental School with a goal to spread important oral health messages to remote and rural communities. Its core funding is provided by the Scottish Government International Development Programme. Henry Schein Dental UK has partnered with the MalDent Project to help provide ongoing support for the creation of the dental hospital and school.

For more than 25 years, Dentaid has been working to improve access to safe, sustainable dental care and oral health education projects in the UK and globally. Henry Schein Dental UK has partnered with Dentaid on dental equipment donations and other technical support projects in the past.

This Malawi initiative is part of Henry Schein Cares, the Henry Schein’s corporate social responsibility programme. Henry Schein Cares stands on five pillars: empowering Team Schein to reach their potential, advancing health equity and expanding access to care for under served communities, accelerating environmental sustainability, strengthening, and diversifying our supply chain, and maintaining strong ethical governance. Health care activities supported by Henry Schein Cares focus on four main areas: (1) wellness, treatment, prevention, and education; (2) capacity building; (3) emergency preparedness and disaster response; and (4) health system strengthening.

Everything required

With the dental chair at the centre of the surgery, Henry Schein understands that a successful practice needs every element to run smoothly and having the right equipment and consumables in place is integral. Henry Schein is proud to offer its customers the full service: from surgery design, finance and training to servicing and aftercare to ensure the practice team has the tools and knowledge to provide an outstanding level of patient care.

If a practice is planning to open a new surgery but wants to avoid the stress of individually purchasing all the equipment and furniture required, Henry Schein can handle the entire refit. On the other hand, if a single product is needed, such as a washer disinfector or operating light, customers will find choice and affordability throughout the range.

Henry Schein can help practices with digital journeys too. Featuring the latest hardware and powerful software from Dentsply Sirona, 3Shape and Ivoclar Vivadent, the technology is all backed up with an education and training programme as well as outstanding customer support to help dentists get the most from their digital investment.
