“It gives you a feeling of reassurance when you know that you have such a high-quality file”

Orry Torsney is principal of Central Park Dental, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, Ireland. He is currently completing a Master’s in Dental Implantology and has completed multiple postgraduate endodontic courses. He says:

“After my conversion to using COLTENE’s HyFlex™ EDM files two years ago, I have been amazed at how predictably I can achieve excellent endodontic outcomes, even when taking on challenging teeth. I have gained confidence with these files and their ability to effortlessly navigate sclerosed and curved canals. It is a simple system that can be used in almost all cases and it gives you a feeling of reassurance when you know that you have such a high-quality file.

“HyFlex™ EDM files’ high fracture resistance makes it possible for me to treat
more complex cases in my general practice setting, which is great for my patients and for my endodontic success rates. I know I can rely on these files, not only because of the evidence in the literature, but also from my own experiences of using them and their inherently reduced risk of file separation, particularly in curved canals.

“Additionally, I have found the Hyflex™ EDM system to be very efficient, as it reduces the need for additional files, which makes endodontics more affordable for my patients”.

BADN welcomes key worker and vaccine statements

The British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN), the professional association for dental nurses in the UK, has welcomed confirmation that dental teams, including dental nurses, are considered key workers, and will be given priority for COVID vaccinations.

BADN President Jacqui Elsden said “Because government statements did not specifically include dental professionals in their list of key workers, many dental nurses have experienced problems in accessing childcare, leaving them unable to go to work – and many dental employers have been unsympathetic to their situation. Clarification on the key worker status of dental professionals in the latest update from Sara Hurley is therefore most welcome and will help to alleviate the problems currently faced by dental nurses.

“Equally, the news that Prime Minister Boris Johnson this week confirmed that dental professionals will be prioritised for the Covid vaccinations is greatly welcomed and will put many dental nurses’ minds at ease.

“Information on the current situation is included on the Covid pages of our website www.badn.org.uk and updated whenever we receive new information.”

Dental Protection and BADT announce partnership

Dental Protection and the British Association of Dental Therapists have announced a partnership, including a 15% discount for BADT members on their Dental Protection subscription.

Dental Protection and BADT have partnered to offer support to dental therapists and hygienists, many of whom have returned to practise, despite significant challenges including new ways of working, and a significant backlog of patients as routine treatment resumes.

The British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) was established in 1962, and its first annual general meeting included discussions about protection against personal risk— what is now provided by professional indemnity.  BADT is still run by working dental therapists and hygienists to represent its members. Their work includes raising awareness of members, skills and assets, as well as advising on national policy.

Dr Raj Rattan MBE, Dental Director at Dental Protection, said: “I am delighted that Dental Protection will be offering a generous discount to members of the BADT. It is a reflection of the value we place on this partnership. It also emphasises the importance of teamwork in clinical practice today and in the future. We look forward to developing some joint initiatives to further support members of the BADT.”

Debbie McGovern, President of the British Association of Dental Therapists, said: “The BADT is extremely happy to be working with Dental Protection to bring discounts to their members. Dental Protection, as part of the Medical Protection Society, were the first organisation to provide access to indemnity to dental therapists, so it is particularly fitting that we have now formed this valuable professional relationship. We look forward to working together to support our members.”

The case for ridge preservation

With so many ways of doing things in modern dentistry, it’s important for professionals to consider all the possibilities in order to deliver the best possible patient care. Different approaches and techniques can lead to varying treatment success, with a multitude of factors impacting the final result. By sharing top tips, discussing experiences and evaluating clinical concepts, dental professionals can improve their capabilities as a collective and, ultimately, enhance the care that they deliver to their patients.

In dental implantology, where new ideas are constantly emerging, it is crucial to assess and challenge techniques and products. Only with proper evaluation and careful development can dental implant treatment be optimised for different clinical situations, enabling more patients to benefit from effective solutions.

The ADI Team Congress 2021 will be the perfect place for dental professionals involved in the field to join the conversations. Entitled “The Great Debate”, it will do exactly what it says on the tin, providing a platform for constructive discussion and the sharing of expertise from leading lights across the global profession.

Among the highly anticipated speakers will be Dr Daniel Thoma, a Specialist in Reconstructive Dentistry and ITI Fellow from Switzerland, with particular interests in dental implantology and aesthetic dentistry. He will be presenting at the ADI Team Congress as part of the Plenary Programme, making the case for ridge preservation in a debate about possible treatment modalities for the failed central incisor.

Speaking about the main challenges of ridge preservation and the benefits available when delivered in the right cases and performed effectively, Dr Thoma comments:

“The main challenges of ridge preservation techniques are associated with conducting a proper risk analysis and ensuring prosthetically-orientated treatment planning with the final outcome in mind. Depending on the specific case and the risks involved with that particular patient, there are often various therapeutic options that might be appropriate. The impact of different treatment strategies is documented in several situations, so the research should be used to support the planning and decision-making process in order to achieve the most pleasing outcome.

“In the right cases, the key benefits of ridge preservation are the ease of treatment and the reduced need for guided bone regeneration at dental implant placement. Clinically, this approach maintains the ridge profile of both the hard and soft tissue for enhanced aesthetics.”

During his session, Dr Thoma will share his wealth of expertise to help delegates improve their knowledge regarding ridge preservation techniques. He will detail the clinical steps involved and offer practical advice that clinicians will likely find insightful.

“To ensure the success of treatment,” Dr Thoma continues, “clinicians need a sound knowledge of all the available treatment options, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. If choosing to proceed with ridge preservation, the key is to apply the correct clinical sequence during therapy for optimal results.”

The ADI Team Congress 2021 will present a comprehensive educational programme, with sessions dedicated to dentists, dental nurses, dental hygienists and therapists, practice managers and dental technicians. There will be a combination of lectures, workshops and demonstrations on offer to provide an all-inclusive and diverse learning experience for delegates. A major trade exhibition will host an array of dental suppliers and manufacturers offering dental implant-related products and services. Plus, the legendary Congress Dinner on Saturday night will provide an opportunity to relax and enjoy time with friends and colleagues.

The entire event is designed to encourage discussion and debate among peers, enabling everyone to offer their perspectives and learn from others. Talking about the format of the event, Dr Thoma adds:

“Clinicians will be challenged by different speakers focusing on specific treatment modalities. Attendees will be provided with an excellent overview on various treatment modalities. This is an interesting event design since the speakers will be challenged as well as delegates. They have to defend their option/therapy so delegates can make their treatment decisions based on the data/cases presented.”

If you are involved with the provision, restoration or maintenance of dental implants, this will be the perfect opportunity to update your knowledge and skills, while joining the conservation. To get your voice heard and to hear from industry-leading professionals, don’t miss the ADI Team Congress 2021.
