{my}dentist teams up with Sony Pictures to celebrate its upcoming film Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile

{my}dentist has teamed up with Sony Pictures on an exciting new agreement to promote the upcoming film, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile out in UK cinemas on October 14. The new initiative will engage both patients and {my}dentist’s practice teams to help promote children’s oral health.

Through the agreement, {my}dentist will promote Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile across its network of nearly 600 practices and will run an exclusive competition for a chance to win a family trip to New York City, including flights and accommodation, which will be promoted via digital screens and posters, as well as via its website and social media. Children visiting the practices for check-ups during September and October will also receive Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile stickers.

Meanwhile, Lyle’s toothy grin has inspired an oral health promotion where a practice teams have a chance to win an exclusive screening of the film. Any practice that hosts a ‘Kids Club’ oral health education event using new Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile branded materials during September and October will be entered in the draw.

Sarah Griffiths, {my}dentist Director of Marketing, said: “We are really pleased to be teaming up with Sony Pictures’ Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Henry Schein UK participates in ‘Back to School’ programme to help children in need return to the classroom

Henry Schein is celebrating the 25th year of its “Back to School” programme, which provides backpacks, school supplies, and more to support the back-to-school needs of underserved children and their families. Since the programme’s inception in 1998, the company has helped more than 65,000 children start a new school year with confidence.

This year, Team Schein Members at 34 locations, including 21 U.S. facilities and 13 international sites in five countries (Canada, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and United Kingdom) are donating backpacks filled with school supplies to more than 5,000 children. At each Henry Schein location, teams work with local social service agencies to identify participating children and their families. The “Back to School” programme is a flagship initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the company’s global corporate social responsibility programme.

“Over the past 25 years, the ‘Back to School’ programme has continued to grow and evolve, helping to meet the ever-changing needs of the communities in which we live and work,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. “Our inaugural programme served 175 children, and the Team Schein spirit has remained strong since the beginning, with Team Schein Members joining all over the world to help furnish children with the essentials needed to have a successful school year.

Back to School in the UK

Henry Schein UK provided 25 backpacks with school supplies to Bradfields Academy in Chatham, which aims to be a leading centre of excellence in the Special Education Sector where students can thrive and fully develop their cognitive, social and emotional skills in order to take a full, active and responsible role in their local community and beyond as Global Citizens and Ambassadors for students with disabilities.*)

“Bradfields Academy is extremely grateful to the team at Henry Schein for including our students in their ‘Back to School’ bags scheme,” said David Waters, Head of Bradfields Academy. “Due to the significant cost of living crisis, many of our families are extremely impacted, and with the rising cost of clothing and uniforms, not all are able to provide students with the basic equipment that we would expect them have. The scheme has provided many students with a school bag containing all the necessary equipment for an excellent start to the year. I, on behalf of the academy, would like to thank Henry Schein for this support and their ongoing support of the academy, and the trust we are part of. I am certain that the students and families will also be passing on their thanks in their own way.”

Mr. Waters added, “Whilst students who do not have the correct equipment would never be put at a disadvantage, there is always a sense of pride from the students that have their own. This pride is now shared by even more students. In turn, this is reflected in their application in lessons, and has a positive impact on their progress. The kindness and support from the Henry Schein team has ensured that even more students can display this.”

The backpacks were delivered to the school by Team Schein Members Wayne Fisher (Operations Assistant, Materials Handling), Shantel Jarrett (Receptionist and Administrative Assistant), and Dean Knight (Communications and Engagement Partner, HR).

“We are pleased to collaborate with Bradfields Academy to help their students have a successful academic year,” said Patrick Allen, Managing Director, Henry Schein Dental UK, Ireland, South Africa, and The Nordics. “Giving back to the communities we serve is the cornerstone of the Henry Schein culture, and we look forward to the ‘Back to School’ programme each year, because it provides our Team Schein Members with the opportunity to help make the first day of school enjoyable and stress-free for local students.”

How it all began

“The ‘Back to School’ programme began when Team Schein Members came together with an idea to help kids in need, under the leadership of Gerry Benjamin, our recently retired Chief Administrative Officer, who played an integral role in making the programme what it is today. ‘Back to School’ exemplifies our longstanding commitment to investing in initiatives that raise awareness about, and deliver benefits to, underserved populations within the communities where we operate, and we are especially pleased to celebrate its 25th year,” Mr. Bergman said.

Back to School #scheinchats

In the latest episode of #scheinchats, Henry Schein’s signature social media series, Dan LaRosa, Senior Manager of Team Schein and Community Services at Henry Schein, sat down with Fran Mellow, Division Director at Family Service League, New York, to discuss how the “Back to School” programme helps enhance access to essentials, why starting the school year off with confidence is important, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and what companies can do to build similar initiatives. Watch the discussion here.

Leading UK group claims law firm Leigh Day seeks compensation for Associate Dentists

Law firm Leigh Day is launching a workers’ rights claim on behalf of self-employed Associate Dentists seeking compensation for unpaid holiday, and paid holiday in the future.

The claim follows a decision by the Employment Appeal Tribunal earlier in the year that ruled an Associate Dentist Mrs. N Sejpal might be a worker and therefore entitled to holiday pay.

A final outcome is still being decided on, but Leigh Day believes there is a strong case that self-employed Associate Dentists are workers and entitled to:

  • Back pay for unpaid holiday pay for the whole period of your latest associate dentist contract
  • 28 days of paid annual leave in the future if you still work for the same practice

Leigh Day is acting under a ‘no win no fee’ agreement, which means clients do not have to pay anything unless they win the claim. If Leigh Day is successful, the firm will deduct 25% plus VAT from clients’ compensation to cover legal fees.

Tom Hewitt, a solicitor in the employment team at Leigh Day, said:

“The recent case heard by the Employment Appeal Tribunal, relating to Associate Dentist worker status, is hugely significant for all self-employed Associate Dentists.

“Self-employed people have protection against discrimination if they are found by the tribunal to be a ‘worker’, and all workers should receive all the benefits they are entitled to, including holiday pay.

“That’s why Leigh Day has decided to launch this claim. It is important Associate Dentists aren’t short changed because they are being wrongly classified.”

The most important element for implant success? An understanding patient!

The Adult Dental Health Survey, taken in 2009 (published 2011), called implants “increasingly mainstream”.[i]Over a decade on, this area of dentistry has gone from strength to strength, thanks to digital technologies and biocompatible materials, giving millions of people worldwide a highly desirable alternative to a removable prosthesis. Aesthetically, dental implants can look naturally beautiful, too.

This is a treatment that requires investment, though. Not just financial also, an ongoing commitment to achieving and maintaining a successful result that will last for years to come. The team supporting the planning and delivery of implant therapy will include a number of practitioners, general and specialist. From the general/referring dentist to the dentist placing the implants , the dental hygienist and/or therapist, practice manager, front-desk staff… the list can and will go on, depending on the complexity of the case, and everyone has their part to play. Among the most crucial elements, though, is the patient, their oral and general health-related practises and behaviours, also their willingness to comply with advice and instructions.

Good communication between the patient and the team must begin pre-treatment, to optimise success. For example, the patient should be fit and well, a non-smoker as well as having optimal oral health. If this is not the case, positive communication to manage expectations will enable them to understand why they will need to improve their oral health status before implant therapy can start.

Expect people to be doing independent research, as part of the decision-making process. The quality of some information online and social media can be a source of frustration for healthcare professionals, but the positive side to this is empowered and proactive patients. What you learn during open and frank discussions will enrich every area of your practice, as well as their experience. If they have read about implant failure, for example, you can talk about how they are neither a “place and go” solution, nor come with a lifetime guarantee. If they ask you about peri-implantitis – which has been described as a “ticking time bomb” – this is an opportunity to explain what we do know about this disease, which can affect the hard and soft tissue around an implant, compromising its stability. [ii] Peri-implantitis is a challenge for the profession, not least because figures for its true burden vary.[iii] With more long-term studies needed, research has found that factors that predispose an individual to peri-implantitis include periodontal disease, cigarette and smokeless tobacco use, hyperglycaemia and obesity.[iv] An association between genetics and specific risks for peri-implantitis has also been offered; other studies have stated this relationship cannot be “conclusively determined”.[v] As for other, local factors, these include excess cement and a poorly designed/fitting prosthesis. Also, peri-implant mucositis, a plaque-induced inflammatory condition, which presents similar to periodontitis on natural teeth. This can, and should be detected at a routine appointment, and reversed before it progresses to peri-implantitis.

The most important point for implant patients is to understand how regular visits to the dentist alongside meticulous homecare is the most fundamental thing they can do, to give their investment the best chance of enduring. There is a wider acceptance and understanding about the value of prevention, and that elevated, optimised preventive care means more than a brisk once-over with a toothbrush twice a day. Optimising prevention is particularly crucial for implant patients. Correct brushing technique should be reviewed before and after the placement of an implant; show as well as tell people how to clean comprehensively. Recommending a homecare kit compromised of an everyday brush that is comfortable to hold and use around the implant site, plus a tool for interdental cleaning and other adjuncts that will not only improve oral hygiene before an implant is placed, but keep the mouth hygienically clean afterwards, to promote healing. TANDEX is a premium brand that produces high-quality products to prevent oral disease and support long-term health, including brushes and interdental tools – available in UltraSoft variants – also mouthwashes and GEL, to be applied following your instruction.

Implant therapy has become the gold standard for restoring damaged or missing teeth, in function and aesthetics. In another 10 years’ time, given the speed of advancement, who knows what we will be able to achieve in this fast-developing field! Although more research is needed into peri-implantitis, as well as other factors that can compromise stability, what is key is that your patients understand the role they have to play in their implant’s success. For now, good communication and relationships, leading to trust and a willingness to work as part of the implant team, will help more patients enjoy the many benefits of this lifechanging treatment.

Soft tissue regeneration, supported by science

Effective soft tissue regeneration and healing is an important part of successful oral surgery. It is often the role of the dental hygienist and therapist to support this step so it’s crucial that they have access to the right products.

The Straumann® range of biomaterials offers a solution for most challenges in this area. Straumann® Emdogain®, for example, is a biomimetic gel containing Enamel Matrix Derivative that accelerates periodontal regeneration and wound healing, while helping to minimise gingival recession.

Amie Holder-Soares, dental hygienist from Cambridge, says about Straumann® Emdogain®:

“It is highly beneficial to be able to induce all periodontal tissues. It is also incredible to support bone regeneration, which makes this an amazing treatment to perform for patients. It’s very easy to administer – super straightforward – doesn’t take long to place and delivers results.

“I absolutely think that more dental hygienists would benefit from using it in practice. In addition, the customer service from StraumannÒ has been second-to-none.”

Bringing new techniques to the profession

Among the hands-on workshops at the BACD Annual Conference will be Dr Mide Ojo and Dr Thomas Sealey’s session Smilefast Activation Course: A new workflow in delivering direct composite restorations”.

Mide says:

“During the workshop, I hope we can give dentists an appreciation of the Smilefast workflow from the design stages and trial smile to refinement and the final delivery. Taking a practical approach, the session will delve into the hands-on application of the stents required.

“Tom and I are general dentists and we have found this technique to improve our workflow significantly. We have already treated and changed the lives of hundreds of patients. We’d love for colleagues to attend the workshop with an open mindset and to see how Smilefast provides a high-quality alternative to freehand composite dentistry.”

Reflecting on what the BACD Annual Conference means to him, Mide adds:

“I will never forget my first BACD Annual Conference back in 2012 – it was an eye-opening experience because I’d never seen that level of dentistry in the UK before. For me, this event is essential to help raise and maintain the standard of dentistry I deliver. As an organisation, the BACD is fantastic, providing a safe space for dentists to learn about cosmetic dentistry and a support network that is crucial for career development.”

Acclaimed London dental practice, Dawood & Tanner, joins Dentex group

Specialist dental business adviser, Christie & Co, oversees Dentex acquisition, Dawood & Tanner, one of the UK’s leading specialist dental practices

One of the best known and largest private practices in the UK, Dawood & Tanner was formed in 1992 when its founders, Dr Andrew Dawood and Dr Susan Tanner, acquired a practice in London’s Cavendish Square. Three years later, they relocated to 45 Wimpole Street, W1, and, following huge success, expanded into 44 Wimpole Street in 2014. Constructed in 1770s, these two, interconnecting exceptional buildings are Grade II listed and offer state-of-the-art clinical facilities but with all the character associated with late eighteenth-century architecture.

The practice offers 14 surgeries, an operating room, and two consulting rooms, and provides the highest standards of patient care delivered by a world-class team of clinicians and support.

After successfully operating Dawood & Tanner for more than 30 years, Andrew and Susan engaged Christie & Co in late 2021 to assist them with finding the right choice of partner to support the next phase of the business’s growth. Both are fully committed to the long-term development of the practice and will remain in a clinical capacity for the foreseeable future.

The choice of purchaser was critical, and a confidential process was undertaken from which Dentex, an expanding UK based dental group, was chosen. A pioneer of the dental partnership model in the UK, Dentex has itself recently announced a merger of its business with Portman which is the third largest dental group in the UK.

Andrew and Susan comment, “We are delighted to be moving forward in partnership with Dentex through this next phase of our professional journey, excited to be able to focus more upon our patients, referrers, and our clinical activities.”

Oliver Snowden, Director of Partnerships & Acquisitions at Dentex, comments, “Dawood & Tanner is a practice well known for its exceptional quality, and when I first met Andrew and Susan this reputation was only enhanced further. We are delighted that they chose to partner with Dentex, and we look forward to working with them and the wider team to continue developing their exceptional practice in the years to come.”

The sale was handled by Simon Hughes and Steve Darbon at Christie & Co.

Simon Hughes, Managing Director – Medical at Christie & Co, comments, “It has been a privilege working with Susan and Andrew over the past few months to broker the sale of their amazing practice to Dentex. Over the last 30 years, they have worked tirelessly to create a unique business which is truly a centre of excellence and is admired across the dental profession. We wish them both the very best for the next exciting chapter with their new partner, Dentex.”

Legal advisors in the sale were David Meisel at Shoosmiths for the vendors, and Charles Russell Speechlys on behalf of Dentex.

The sale completed in September 2022 – terms were undisclosed.
