Supporting the DLA and the dental technology profession

The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2021 will once again be presented in collaboration with the Dental laboratories Association (DLA) and will provide a much-awaited opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues from throughout the profession. It will feature hours of educational content, with world-class speakers and various dental suppliers.

Until then, the DLA needs your support in its campaign to ensure that dental labs are recognised for their contribution to dentistry and supported in their pandemic recovery. James Neilson, Director for Policy & Politics at the DLA, commented:

“It is essential for the DLA to continue lobbying political figures to ensure that dental technology receives the support that it needs to keep businesses operating. Dental laboratories have a vital role to play in patient care and the wider dental profession – it’s important that they are recognised for this. We appreciate that the entire UK economy has faced challenges this year, but the healthcare of thousands of people could be impacted if dental laboratories are forgotten about by Government at such a difficult time.”

The next DTS will be held on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd May 2021– Hall 5, Birmingham NEC, co-located with the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show.

Be part of a community

Being a dental hygienist or dental therapist comes with many benefits. Among these is the opportunity to have a more flexible work life, one that means that many individuals in these roles are likely to work at multiple practices during the week.

However, this can make it difficult to know who to turn to when you need support. So why not join a community of likeminded individuals within the profession? Doing so can bring many benefits.

Inspire one another

Dental hygiene and therapy can be quite isolating careers in that you are likely to be the only person with one of these roles within the practices you work in. This means that even when you’re stressed, it can be difficult to find people to talk to among colleagues, especially as they are facing different challenges and may not fully understand the full extent of what you are going through.

Furthermore, this work arrangement also means that you are unlikely to have colleagues who understand your field of work in its entirety and therefore cannot always inspire you with ideas and tips that you can apply to your own appointments.

Joining a community of likeminded individuals paves the way for discussion and innovation. By doing so you can easily form strong bonds with other dental hygienists and dental therapists who will, in turn, give you the support you need and be able to fully understand your situation as they are facing the same challenges. It also means that you can think outside the box and discuss ideas with people with the same skills – this is a great way of exploring multiple facets of your career and innovating in ways that will benefit both you and your patients.

Evolve in your career

Another advantage of joining a group or Society is that these organisations often have opportunities for you to grow in your career and to learn new things. From online events to national meet-ups, to smaller social occasions and online learning opportunities, these communities are an exceptional way to earn tailored CPD that really applies to your profession.

Furthermore, these events double up as fantastic networking opportunities and chances to learn about the latest news and developments from manufacturers within the industry, keeping you informed and enabling you to make bonds that will prove invaluable in your career.

Fighting for change

As dentistry continues to evolve, dental hygiene and dental therapy must also fight for progress. Joining a community is a great way to have your voice heard and to truly make a difference.

The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) is especially passionate about supporting and helping dental hygienists and dental therapists to flourish in their careers, while also making change happen. The BSDHT offers members incredible educational resources, opportunities to network and connect, and the chance to campaign for the necessary changes within the industry, all the while acting as a support network that can be called on at all times to help.

Together we’re stronger

Working as a dental hygienist or dental therapist should always be rewarding and filled with opportunity. By joining a community and embracing the benefits that being in a Society or group will bring, you can make the most out of your career!

Scientifically proven secret weapon for extra protection against Covid-19

As dental practices remain open, many dentists are taking extra precautions to protect themselves, their staff and their clients during consultations. There is one scientifically proven secret weapon which professionals are turning to for extra protection against Covid-19.

Whilst many dental professionals are grateful and relieved to be able to keep the doors of their practices open during the third lockdown, some report they’re feeling vulnerable and exposed to the Covid-19 virus. Whilst PPE is generally regarded as the most effective and trusted of protective measures, many are introducing additional products they know are rooted in science.

Dental Hygienist, Tim Ives, says “Since dental clinics are safe to attend and remain open during this lockdown, we’re seeing more and more dental professionals using their own chosen techniques for additional protection against the Covid-19 virus – not only for themselves, but for their staff and their patients too. I know many dental professionals who use the xylitol-based Xlear Nasal Spray regularly, twice a day, before and after practice as they feel it provides extra protection, in addition to the standard PPE they wear and other cross infection strategies they have in place.”

Xylitol’s anti-bacterial and anti-viral capacity is well known to dentists

Tim explains “Xlear Nasal Spray is favoured by dental professionals because it contains an ingredient which is familiar to them – xylitol – which is well-known for its anti-bacterial qualities and is often used in many dental products (including sugar free gum and toothpastes).”

He continues” Encouragingly, we’ve seen a number of recent US-based laboratory trials that prove the efficacy of Xylitol for killing the Covid-19 virus, which is why dental professionals opt for Xlear Nasal Spray themselves. Many are impressed with the findings of the studies and have first-hand knowledge of Xylitol’s capacity to kill bacteria and viruses”.

The recent scientific research to which Tim refers demonstrated that in laboratory conditions, Xlear Nasal Spray is proven to reduce the viral load in the nose, which is vital in fighting COVID-19. Research shows COVID-19 primarily infects and spreads through the upper respiratory system. By reducing viral load in the nose, nasal sprays like Xlear can help limit the severity and transmission of Covid19. (1)

Xlear Nasal Spray’s components are antiviral, which means they block viral adhesion in the nose. A recent study carried out at The University of Tennessee on SARS-CoV-2 concluded “Xylitol exhibits antiviral activity on SARS-CoV-2.” (2)

Peer-reviewed case studies indicate Xlear Nasal Spray helps in treating COVID-19: A first-look trial at Larkin Community Hospital in Miami determined “The patients demonstrated an improvement in the symptoms and a reduction in the clinical course post use of xylitol plus GSE in the form of a nasal spray, commercially available as Xlear nasal spray.” (3)

Tim explains why the nose is an important place to target when it comes to protection against the Covid-19 virus. “Our nose is a very effective natural filter and does a great job at keeping many airborne viruses at bay. Our noses filter 98% of bacteria and allergens so breathing through our noses is recommended if you’re looking for protection. In my opinion, ensuring you are breathing through your nose compared with breathing through your mouth is just as important to protect you from viruses as wearing a face mask.”

Xylitol nasal disinfectant and viral inhibitor

Some practices already ask patients to use a pre-procedural rinse in the practice, and there are several available. In dentistry, clinicians have come to know xylitol as an inhibitor of tooth decay, and dental professionals often asked patients to use a xylitol-containing gum to reduce early oral bacteria However, they almost never think of the nasopharynx or oropharynx as a seeding or staging area for oral problems. Studies have also shown the reduction of virus in the nose and sinus, (4) in particular, SARS-CoV-2, is affected by the ingredients in Xlear. (5) As dental professionals ask patients to be more mindful before their appointments, it is possible to ask them to disinfect their noses for a few days before an appointment.

Figure 1: Rates of Xlear xylitol nasal spray effectiveness against COVID-19 source: commonsensemedicine.org.

Dosing with a xylitol nasal spray has always been two sprays in each nostril before retiring and upon awakening. The same dosing was followed in two studies using Xlear xylitol nasal spray which are in review now. In short, a xylitol nasal spray makes it difficult for the viral attachment mechanisms to work (figure 1). For more information, please visit https://www.xlear.com/

Janet Goodwin Memorial Fund lauched to support the future of dental nursing

When former Oral Health Foundation President Janet Goodwin sadly passed away in October 2020 she left behind a great legacy.  It is in recognition of this that the Oral Health Foundation have joined together with the British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN) to launch the Janet Goodwin Memorial Fund.

An influential figure within oral health, Janet spent much of her career championing the importance of education and the career development of dental nurses.  It is for this reason that it seemed only fitting for a memorial fund be set up in her name to further that cause.

The Janet Goodwin Memorial Fund will support dental nursing students and registered dental nurses with bursaries for the development of their careers. For dental nursing students, this might take the form of financial help with their education, while qualified dental nurses can apply for support with post-graduate studies.

The Oral Health Foundation and BADN hopes the new series of grants can help provide much needed financial support for individuals pursuing a career in dental nursing.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, believes the fund goes straight to the heart of Janet’s work.

Dr Carter says: “I would like to think Janet would be really proud by a project like this. During her distinguished career, Janet battled hard for her profession and made fantastic strides in boosting the visibility of dental nursing amongst the profession and the public.

“Janet was a terrific ambassador for her fellow dental nurses and what better way to honour that than through a fund which will help dental nurses further their careers. By providing support for our future dental nurses, as well as current ones, this fund will help secure a stronger and brighter future for dentistry as a whole.”

Janet was used to breaking down barriers during her career and was passionate about improving the oral health of people up and down the country.

In 2015, Janet became the first dental nurse to be elected President of the Oral Health Foundation in the charity’s nearly 50-year history. She also was the first dental nurse admitted to the General Dental Council. Always looking for new challenges, Janet was also Chair of the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses – on the second dental nurse to hold that position – and later employed by the NEBDN as Qualifications Manager.

Janet was a long-time active member, and Fellow, of the British Association of Dental Nurses and was also a recipient of their ‘Outstanding Contribution to Dental Nursing Award’.

Jacqui Elsden, President of the British Association of Dental Nurses, adds: “It is without doubt that Janet will be truly missed across the Dental community. She was a wonderful advocate for our dental nursing profession, particularly for dental nurse education and oral health care.  I feel immensely proud to be part of the collaboration leading to the founding of the Fund in her memory. It will be a unique opportunity for dental nurses to begin or further their career in dental nursing and inspire a new generation.”

Tracy Stuart of NBS Training offering dental teams ’12-month Profitable Dentist Plan’

Tracy Stuart of NBS Training is offering dental teams the incredible opportunity to take part in a bespoke ’12-month Profitable Dentist Plan’, creating a bespoke blueprint formula for success.

Coming out of a challenging year, it is more important than ever before that dentists understand that changes are needed to their team’s mindset. If things stay the same, practices will fail to thrive and might not even survive.

Speaking about this unique chance, Tracy said, ‘The reason training usually fails is because behaviour doesn’t change, and new habits aren’t developed. My unique approach to coaching focuses on the team learning to understand how their thoughts hold them back and where a new mindset is needed to make better choices.’

In a nutshell, the training brings about a ‘can do’ attitude, resulting in practice owners who are amazed at how simple it can be to lead a team when you have Tracy on board.

To book a 30-minute strategy call with Tracy to see how she can help your practice achieve the same incredible results as previous clients, simply email tracy.stuart@nbstraining.co.uk or call 01438 217944.

No one-size-fits-all biomaterial

There is no one-size-fits-all biomaterial. This means clinicians need access to a range of solutions in order to find the best option for each individual case.

The Straumann Group understands this, which is why it offers a comprehensive and flexible portfolio of evidence-based biomaterials that cater for multiple indications. It consists of xenograft, allograft and synthetic graft materials, as well as resorbable and non-resorbable barrier membranes.

Among them is the Straumann® Emdogain® designed to accelerate soft tissue formation for reduced wound complications, enhanced patient comfort and less post-surgical swelling.
