Being a dental hygienist or dental therapist comes with many benefits. Among these is the opportunity to have a more flexible work life, one that means that many individuals in these roles are likely to work at multiple practices during the week.

However, this can make it difficult to know who to turn to when you need support. So why not join a community of likeminded individuals within the profession? Doing so can bring many benefits.

Inspire one another

Dental hygiene and therapy can be quite isolating careers in that you are likely to be the only person with one of these roles within the practices you work in. This means that even when you’re stressed, it can be difficult to find people to talk to among colleagues, especially as they are facing different challenges and may not fully understand the full extent of what you are going through.

Furthermore, this work arrangement also means that you are unlikely to have colleagues who understand your field of work in its entirety and therefore cannot always inspire you with ideas and tips that you can apply to your own appointments.

Joining a community of likeminded individuals paves the way for discussion and innovation. By doing so you can easily form strong bonds with other dental hygienists and dental therapists who will, in turn, give you the support you need and be able to fully understand your situation as they are facing the same challenges. It also means that you can think outside the box and discuss ideas with people with the same skills – this is a great way of exploring multiple facets of your career and innovating in ways that will benefit both you and your patients.

Evolve in your career

Another advantage of joining a group or Society is that these organisations often have opportunities for you to grow in your career and to learn new things. From online events to national meet-ups, to smaller social occasions and online learning opportunities, these communities are an exceptional way to earn tailored CPD that really applies to your profession.

Furthermore, these events double up as fantastic networking opportunities and chances to learn about the latest news and developments from manufacturers within the industry, keeping you informed and enabling you to make bonds that will prove invaluable in your career.

Fighting for change

As dentistry continues to evolve, dental hygiene and dental therapy must also fight for progress. Joining a community is a great way to have your voice heard and to truly make a difference.

The British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) is especially passionate about supporting and helping dental hygienists and dental therapists to flourish in their careers, while also making change happen. The BSDHT offers members incredible educational resources, opportunities to network and connect, and the chance to campaign for the necessary changes within the industry, all the while acting as a support network that can be called on at all times to help.

Together we’re stronger

Working as a dental hygienist or dental therapist should always be rewarding and filled with opportunity. By joining a community and embracing the benefits that being in a Society or group will bring, you can make the most out of your career!
