There is still some way to go to reduce the prevalence of periodontitis among the UK population. When a patient presents with periodontal disease, a team approach is often most effective for both preventing disease progression and managing their symptoms. There is a comprehensive referral pathway available for professionals, which patients may enter at different points, so it’s important for the team to identify the appropriate next steps on an individual basis. From here, working together collaboratively enables the most holistic and minimally invasive treatment.

The British Society of Periodontology has published a UK version of the European Federation of Periodontology’s S3 Treatment Guidelines for periodontitis. The aim of the document is to improve the quality of periodontal treatment delivered and support the systemic health of the UK population.

Step 1 of the guidance is focused on “Building the foundations for optimal treatment” and includes professional mechanical plaque removal, as well as personalised oral hygiene advice and patient education. This is where a clinically proven tool such as the Waterpik® Water Flosser can be hugely beneficial. It is an ideal way to tailor a patient’s at-home oral care routine, providing an easy to use interdental cleaning product that has been shown to remove plaque more effectively than alternative solutions and improve gingival health. The Water Flosser also supports step 4 of the BSP’s guidelines, which promotes the importance of maintenance for long-term oral health.

What does the science say?

The Waterpik® Water Flosser is supported by more than 80 scientific research papers that demonstrate its ability to elevate oral health standards for a wide range of patients. The various models and tips available ensure solutions can be further customised according to each patient’s needs.

All research – available on the website – shows that the Waterpik® Water Flosser is:

  • Up to 50% more effective than string floss for improving gingival health[i]
  • Up to 50% more effective than traditional dental floss for reducing gingival bleeding[ii]
  • Up to 56% more effective for reducing bleeding than interdental brushes[iii]
  • More than twice as effective as string floss for implant patients[iv]
  • Significantly more effective than string floss for orthodontic patients[v]
  • Able to remove up to 99.9% of biofilm from treated areas in just 3 seconds[vi]
