In September, the government outlined its strategy for what could be a tough winter ahead. As part of its Plan B, should Plan A not be sufficient to reduce pressure on the NHS, is the recommendation that people work from home, where possible. At the same time, a YouGov survey commissioned by the BBC revealed most people believe that workers would “never return to offices at the same (pre-pandemic) rate”.[i]

Even if remote working isn’t an option in your role, it is here to stay and its impact on working environments and workplace cultures will affect us all. The myth that people are less productive and processes less efficient when they are remote has been busted; in fact, the reverse is often true.

For some industries, this is the start of an exciting new era. The technologies that support remote working are developing rapidly to keep up with demand, as more businesses are finding it can offer a way to do things better, benefiting the entire team  including those in the physical workplace.

A leader in the evolution of remote working

The ability to process payroll remotely has enabled millions of workers around the world to be paid correctly and on time during the pandemic – it is as simple as that. Payroll was an already-complex task, even for small businesses. More UK companies are now required to auto-enrol staff into a pension scheme (and face a penalty if they fail to comply). Since March 2020, added complications often included temporary changes to people’s hours; in your practice, maybe you implemented new schedules for a while, with staff working in separate bubbles.

Good payroll is always about flexibility and security as well as attention to detail. So, no wonder that companies are now choosing to outsource payroll to a specialist provider. A remote payroll serves the physical team because, at the most fundamental level, it’s one less thing for them worry about. No more anxiety about someone being unable to come in to deliver payroll, that you’ve forgotten to add a new starter or apply a salary increase, or that you unwittingly made an error for HMRC. For example, the off payroll working legislation (IR35) was extended from 6 April 2021, and it’s up to each company to decide if the rules apply to them. A payroll provider will digest the huge amount of information needed to calculate what every individual should be paid every month and share the detail with you, without you having to get stressed about missing something.

Cloud-based systems are easy and efficient and keep you in the loop, because you will always able to access key data – it is always your data, for your business. When you outsource, you’re not relinquishing control, you are collaborating with a specialist who is part of your team as well as being at the forefront of progress. As more people get on board and use remote, Cloud-based platforms, the better the technology is going to get. Software developers are raising their game, offering tailored, focussed solutions that businesses will find it worthwhile investing in. But future payrolls are also going to be more intuitive, and employers will be able to use them to gather valuable insights, to help them optimise efficiency as well as profits.

Outsourcing payroll represents remote working at its best. The payroll of the future will give you precious time to spend brainstorming your strategy for 2022 when the world will hopefully be a more positive place! For your practice it’s about more room to breathe, so you can focus on business development and motivating your team. And nothing motivates people like be paid correctly. With a flexible, secure and remote payroll, it will be easy to add contractors or self-employed workers as necessary, as you identify gaps that need filling to elevate patient services.

More remote working has bought the future of payroll closer. So, if you haven’t already, switch to an outsourced payroll. Premium providers Wagemate have many dental clients and use the latest technology to keep you one step ahead. Your data will not just be secure but accessible, as Wagemate work alongside you as part of an established and supportive client relationship.

Last year was all about declaring the “new normal”. Now we’re at the tail end of 2021, we can see that “normal” – meaning ‘expected’ and ‘typical’ – is likely to be workplaces combining the physical and remote to optimise productivity and save time and money. Payroll is better managed when it’s outsourced, so explore your options and get your practice ready for the future.
