Professor Mark Hector honoured by International Association of Paediatric Dentistry

Professor Mark Hector, Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Dundee, has been awarded a prestigious Honorary Membership of the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry (IAPD) at its 27thcongress in Cancun, Mexico.

This is only the 19th time in the 50-year history of the IAPD that it has awarded an Honorary Membership, the highest honour that can be bestowed on a member.

Professor Hector said, “I am delighted to have received this honour from the IAPD, which represents more than 15,000 dentists around the world.”

Professor Hector was instrumental in securing the future of the Association when he was first appointed to the Board in 1989 as its Secretary/Treasurer, a post he held for nine years. He subsequently became the IAPD Editor for the International Journal for Paediatric Dentistry and then President in 2009-11.

Professor Hector has been Dean of the School of Dentistry since 2011.

Evidence-based policy making at risk, warn dentists, as Prevention Green Paper dumped

The British Dental Association has expressed its dismay at the eleventh-hour publication of the Prevention Green paper.

The document, which includes policies on supervised brushing in schools and water fluoridation that government models suggest could shave millions off treatment costs, was meant to form the cornerstone of the government’s strategy for the NHS. It also includes pledges to ban sales of energy drinks to under-16s, expansion of the sugar levy, and further action on childhood obesity.

The BDA has described the publication as a ‘fire sale’, and challenged the incoming government not to turn its back on evidence-based policy making.

BDA Chair Mick Armstrong said:

“A Green Paper setting out big ideas to finally put prevention into practice now looks more like a fire sale.

“The tragedy is this document contains numerous tried-and-tested policies, which could save children from pain and our NHS millions in treatment costs.

“In the rush to avoid the charge of ‘Nanny Statism’ the first casualty cannot be evidence-based policymaking. Health professionals will look to the next government to show leadership, and will not let this process be swept under the carpet.”

Less than one week left to respond to GDC’s three-year strategy consultation

The deadline to respond to the General Dental Council’s (GDC) consultation on its three-year strategy is fast approaching. The regulator is seeking views about the choices it intends to make, in the delivery of its broad statutory objectives, in the consultation which closes on Tuesday 30 July.

The strategy sets out a vision for the GDC to:

  • protect patients while being fair to registrants, cost-effective and proportionate: by focusing on education and engagement, supporting career-long learning and promoting high standards of care and professional conduct
  • work with the professions and partners to ensure that public concerns can be addressed by the right body, quickly and effectively
  • use evidence, research and evaluation to ensure enforcement is cost-effective and right-touch
  • ensure its approach to regulation keeps pace with change
  • continue to build on the considerable improvements it has made.

This is a key moment for dental regulation and the GDC is calling on professionals, partners and the public to engage and support this work.

Although the GDC is clear that this is not a consultation on fee levels, it does recognise those levels are determined by the costs of delivering the Strategy and addresses the ARF accordingly. Due to improved financial control and cost-reduction across the organisation, and establishing greater clarity over the costs of regulating different groups of professionals, the GDC says it expects the proposed strategy to result in a significant reduction in the ARF for dentists and a very small increase in the fee level for dental care professionals.

GDC Head of Policy and Research, Rebecca Cooper, said:

“We have come a long way towards realising our goal of achieving a better, fairer system of dental regulation – as set out in Shifting the balance – but we know there is still much to do. The priorities we identified then remain very much at the core of our ambition for the next three years and this strategy sets out how we intend to fulfil our objectives over that time and the resource that will be afforded to each. This is a great opportunity to influence the GDC’s direction until 2022 and we want to hear from as many people as possible.”

The consultation can be accessed on the GDC’s website and the deadline to respond is Tuesday 30 July.

Best believe the hype

Removable dentures were once the go-to solution for tooth loss, but dental implants have proven even more popular.

The most effective systems include TBR’s Z1 implant, which combines the biocompatibility of titanium and zirconia in one seamless component. Clinically proven to drastically reduce bacterial colonisation, the Z1 protects patients from the risk of iatrogenic inflammation or infection.[i]

This enables the tissue to heal around the implant in a way that mimics natural gingival growth, so that patients are able to achieve highly aesthetic and functional results.

Refresh your skills

Dr Jon Henley from Darlington Restorative Dentistry Referrals recently took the Aligner system hands-on course with IAS Academy to update his knowledge of anterior alignment orthodontics using clear aligners. When asked what he thought about the course, he said:

“On every level the course was first-class. From the content and the style and delivery of the trainer, to the support that was provided, the training ticked all the boxes for me.

“I wanted to refresh and improve my skills in this area, and that’s exactly what I feel like I’ve done. For all of these reasons, I would definitely recommend to other general dental practitioners interested in offering clear aligner treatment.”
