BSDHT – Getting the right messages out there

Helen Minnery – President of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) – was a guest speaker on Talk Radio in March, discussing tooth erosion and its prevention.

She emphasised how diet is one of the most important considerations for avoiding tooth erosion, more so than the products used during daily cleaning. Helen made clear that it is acidic food and drinks that have the greatest influence and that people need to think about how often and when they consume such things.

She also gave specific examples of some of the most acidic foods and drinks to be aware of, and offered listeners some practical advice to reduce the potential for enamel erosion.

This is just one way that the BSDHT continues to raise awareness of dental problems among the general population, particularly highlighting the need for improved oral health for children. To find out more about the society and what else it does, contact the team today.

BBC Scotland comes to CALCIVIS

This week, BBC Scotland interviewed Adam Christie, CEO of CALVICIS to speak comprehensively about the development of the company’s imaging system and told viewers how this innovative new dental device is helping to revolutionise preventative dentistry.

Filmed at a dental practice in Edinburgh, Adam showed how the CALCIVIS imaging system works and explained:

“Using a recombinant photoprotein, the CALCIVIS imaging system identifies free calcium ions released from actively demineralising tooth surfaces.”

Viewers saw how the CALCIVIS imaging system produces a very short, low-level flash of light that is detected by an integrated intraoral sensor and presented as a glowing, digital map at the chair side. It was agreed that CALCIVIS offers dental practitioners an early detection device to identify enamel demineralisation in the earliest, most reversible stages, which enables them to plan prompt management to prevent dental caries.

In addition, the non-invasive CALCIVIS system helps patients to understand their risk of dental caries more easily and motivates them to improve oral hygiene levels.

As Adam Christie explained to the BBC, “CALCIVIS is a first for British Dentistry. Never before has it been so easy to detect areas of active demineralisation so efficiently.”

If you would like to know more about this remarkable technology, contact the CALCIVIS team today.

Dental Directory voices concern for UK dentistry in talks with MP Priti Patel

L-R: Mark Stephenson, Priti Patel and Mimi Lau

Dental Directory has raised concerns over access to NHS dentistry, children’s dental health and how more dentists are urgently needed with MP, Priti Patel.

The Foreign Affairs Select Committee Member met with managing director and commercial director, Mark Stephenson and Mimi Lau, at Dental Directory’s headquarters in Witham, Essex.

Talks focused on the need to address the lack of dental provision across the country and particularly the dentist recruitment crisis.

Children’s dental health and the £18m yearly spend on emergency dental care, were highlighted as indicators that vulnerable people were not getting sufficient access to high-quality NHS dental treatment.

Stephenson said: “We welcome this opportunity to speak with Priti Patel and thank her for taking the time to meet with us.

“Recent research shows that more than half of dental practices in England are closed to new patients and a lack a provision is felt most harshly in deprived communities. The major source of poor access to NHS dentistry is an acute shortage of dentists and if things don’t change, there is a risk that access to the best dentistry will continue to decline.

“As a business that has been operating in this sector for more than 45 years it’s not something we’re willing to stand by and watch.

“We invited Priti Patel as our local MP to raise these issues and help drive change. We need to increase the number of dentists being trained, continue to bring in the best dentists from Europe and, particularly after Brexit, ensure that outstanding dentists from around the world are able to practice in the UK.”

Discussions with the MP also touched on international export of Dental Directory’s own brand range, UnoDent.

Patel adds: “I was delighted to visit Dental Directory. They are an excellent business supplying dental practices across the country with the equipment they need to maintain high quality dental health and hygiene and keep the country smiling.

“As with many businesses they are keen to see how Britain can be best positioned for future trade to support importers and exporters as we leave the EU.”

Commenting on the importance of international relationships for Dental Directory and UK dentistry, Stephenson added: “For our own business international access is also important to our growth.

“Our focus will always be on the UK dental market, but through overseas partnership we’re able to gain insight into product innovation and broaden the breadth of services and products we supply to over 12,000 dental practices, medical institutions and trading partners in the UK.”

Ask Anne: “Why should my broker become my best friend?” – Anne Barker

One of the things that can deter would-be vendors from selling their practice is the prospect of dealing with a wide variety of third-party organisations. For many sellers, particularly those still working in practice, the thought of having to juggle accountants, solicitors, brokers and other agencies as well as maintaining a normal case-load, is simply overwhelming.

As a broker with over 17 years’ experience in the market, and as someone who recently sold my business (when MediHoldings became a Henry Schein company), I can empathise with this. However, there are various things that can be done to mitigate the sheer volume of work involved in selling a practice and in this process a good broker can really be your best friend.

Time is of the essence when selling a practice and it’s important to be surrounded by professionals who understand your needs and wants and who are as committed to a speedy process as you are.

Choosing the right solicitor is vital if time lines are to be met. Recommendation of a solicitor based on their current workload is made easy through a dedicated ‘Solicitors panel’, giving the ability to put forward those who are able to work at a pace set by the vendor, rather than that set by their other clients.

Similarly, with accountants it’s important to work with a broker who will do much of the hard work for you. Your broker should know if your practice is going to take 12 weeks to sell – or even a year – and should advise you accordingly so that a realistic exit strategy can be planned.

Like price, deal structure is negotiable, but is also essential to any deal progressing to completion. It’s not just about finding the right buyer, it’s about brokering the deal. Both the individual needs of the sellers and buyers must be taken into account in structuring the transaction in the most appealing manner for both parties’ and to ensure “a fair deal”. A respectable broker should have an in-depth knowledge of buyers in your area, be able to identify who is most hungry for the business in order to maximise the sale and be capable of obtaining a price that is deemed fit in order for the Principal to either retire or reach an agreed “earn out” period.

Planning the transition of a practice sale is one thing, but navigating a way through the lengthy CQC application process is something else entirely and thanks to its complexity there are many aspects that can go awry. Many agencies and solicitors can charge anything between £400 to £1200 for this service which is why it makes sense to look to a company who are willing to take on the task themselves by offering a complementary CQC consultancy service to their clients, to ensure that the process can be completed as quickly and as smoothly as possible.

Transparency and communication are key values for brokers and keeping clients up to date with progress is essential. It’s important to

keep sellers engaged in the process and the more the broker can help to streamline, the better result we achieve in the long run. Once a practice is for sale I would expect that the vendor is contacted every day if necessary but at least once a week for a progress report.

When acting as a broker it is incumbent on me to establish a relationship of trust with my client. I do this in order to understand what the client wants, so I can best advise on the route to take, ensuring the seller is fully aware of the sales journey they need to travel and to help remove as much aggravation and stress

Offering HPV jab to boys would cut cancer rates, says OHF

As reported in Irish News,  health charity, the Oral Health Foundation has reiterated its call for the urgent introduction of a gender-neutral HPV vaccination in the UK in order to stop a rapid increase in mouth cancer cases.

Mouth cancer rates in the UK have risen by almost 300 per cent within the last three decades and are predicted to rise by more than a third again before 2035.

The charity believes an increase in human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is responsible for the alarming rise in mouth cancer and have branded the UK’s current HPV vaccination programme as inadequate, unfair and discriminatory against males and putting millions of lives at risk. HPV is spread to the mouth via oral sex; HPV can also be responsible for causing cervical, vaginal, penile and anal cancer as well as genital warts.

Peter Baker, HPV Action Campaign Director, said: “A decision to vaccinate boys as well as girls against HPV is now long overdue. Boys in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Israel and the United States are offered the vaccine and the Italian government has just decided to do the same. It’s unacceptable that boys in the UK are being left behind and exposed to the virus that causes 5 per cent of all cancers worldwide.”

Dr Nigel Carter, CEO of the Oral Health Foundation, said: “For far too long men have been excluded from being provided a simple and potentially lifesaving HPV vaccine and this will undoubtedly contribute to the enormous increase in mouth cancer cases.

“Girls have been offered a HPV vaccination though schools to protect against cervical cancer for almost a decade now and it has saved countless lives; the debate around a gender-neutral vaccination has continued for almost this long with no conclusion.

Irish News has said it is estimated that it will cost about £20-24 million per year to extend the current UK HPV vaccination programme to include school-age boys in the UK. In comparison, treatment of HPV-related genital warts in men alone in the UK is estimated to be more than £32m a year, so there are potentially enormous savings to be made by the NHS through the introduction of a gender-neutral vaccine.
