Challenge your thinking and change your perspective

If it’s been a while since your thinking was challenged, it’s time to get out there and see what others are doing to push boundaries. When you keep up-to-date with the latest scientific advances, techniques and technology, you’ll be able to raise your standards, do more for your patients and ultimately deliver the most ethical dentistry.

Taking a step back means allowing yourself to see the bigger picture, as well as things you may have missed and what is – or could be – coming over the horizon. It can sharpen your focus and allow you to ask yourself, ‘What do I need to do now?’

Days doing bread-and-butter treatments sometimes make it easy to forget how far dentistry has come in the past few decades. Now, the aim is to preserve as much healthy tissue and structure as possible, and keep aesthetics and ethics in balance. Minimal preparations have been supported by materials that replicate the function and strength of the natural teeth, for an outcome that is not only beautiful, but long-lasting. It’s not just cutting-edge tech that has enabled this; high-quality research has led to new methods and processes that are evidence-based.

Dentists and dental professionals must therefore always be prepared to embrace new ideas and mindsets. First and foremost, this approach will keep you on your toes, and prevent you being stuck in workflows that may end up becoming unproductive and unenjoyable, if they’re not questioned and adapted. When you let yourself learn and be challenged, you’ll not only gain more skills but you’ll also appreciate how growth is necessary for success.

Dental events are a great way to shift your perspective. You’ll be supported in your quest to discover what’s new by others who are on the same page. Events dedicated to quality learning always attract forward-thinking clinicians who are pushing for better in every area of their work. They have programmes designed to encourage delegates to think again, and inspire them to take further training. The best events are inclusive, whole-team affairs too, so you can share the knowledge together.

The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) is unrivalled when it comes to its Annual Conference – a three-day celebration of learning and networking. A world-leading authority on cosmetic dentistry, the BACD welcomes dentists, technicians and students who are committed to clinical excellence. It’s a thriving and friendly Academy, and the Annual Conference always reflects this spirit of community, while giving those who attend the opportunity to hear from some of the most renowned and established names in the industry, as well as the new pioneers.

The event – now in its 19th year and titled New Horizons – features sessions from Dr Lukasz Lassmann(Demystifying Clicks And Pops – The Ultimate TMJ Masterclass) and Dr Isabella Rocchietta, specialist in periodontology (Restoring Hard And Soft Tissues In Alveolar Atrophies). Dr Lincoln Harris, dentist and CEO of RipeGlobal, is running an advanced treatment planning bootcamp and will also deliver this year’s keynote presentation, Building Aesthetic Foundations.

Dr Fran Brelsford, who practises as a restorative dentist in London, will present A Predictable Posterior Protocol. In her hands-on session, Fran is going to challenge the idea that direct posterior composite restorations is ‘simple’ dentistry. She’ll share the protocol she applies time and time again, to produce restorations that are built to last. An advocate of the importance of post-graduate training, the method she’ll be teaching is based on her own comprehensive study of biomimetics and how it can be applied to the delivery of evidence-based dentistry – she’s here to spread the word! Join her session, and you’ll build on your existing skillset in direct posterior composites, and discover an enhanced protocol to implement with confidence when you return to your own surgery. You’ll also learn how to reduce the risk of post-op problems and understand more about biomimetics, including the literature it is based on.

Dentists, dental professionals and students who want to be the best they can be, should attend events that challenge their thinking, open their minds and give them the opportunity to gain valuable practical skills. The social element should not be understated either! The wider dental ‘family’ is a vital source of friendship and support, and solutions can often be found just by talking to one another. This is something else the BACD is passionate about, as well as sharing knowledge and quality education. Its Annual Conference, happening 9-11 November in London, is open to non-members, but joining will not only get you preferential rates, but a host of other valuable benefits to help you professionally as well as personally.

Great dental events give attendees the opportunity to learn and shift their mindset. They will boost and inspire you – reminding you that, no matter how long you’ve been practising, there is always a way to do things differently. Ultimately, the net result will be happier, healthier patients, who enjoy the highest level of ethical, cutting-edge care that you give them.

New ADI President Elect Announced

The Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) is delighted to announce the results of the most recent Presidential elections and introduce Dr Pynadath George as the new President Elect!

George limits his practice to restorative and implant dentistry, having worked clinically since 2004. He has completed various postgraduate qualifications, including an MSc in Restorative Dentistry from the Eastman Dental Institute, UCL and an MSc in Dental Implants from Warwick University. George is a well-respected lecturer, teacher and mentor, and he has been a member of the ADI for many years now.

Reflecting on why he felt it was important to get involved with the ADI in the first place, George says:

“It’s vital that every implant dentist joins their national implant organisation in order to stay abreast of new techniques and confirm that their existing techniques are still the most effective available. This can also help to stay up-to-date with the latest research and technology in the field. The ADI is the only national implant organisation in the UK, making it the go-to for UK-based implant dentists.”

Having been involved with the association for some time, George considers his journey with the ADI to date:

“I think the greatest benefits of ADI membership are the education and guidance available, as well as being part of a network of like-minded colleagues who provide help when needed. My initial expectation when joining the ADI was just to learn more about dental implantology, but actually I have come to know many more people and developed strong friendships with those on the ADI board and general members. You become part of a wider community, which brings strength to your own clinical work and benefits to your patients. You learn a lot during drinks, food or after lectures during a chat!”

The full list of membership benefits offered by the ADI can be found online, and includes:

  • Free access to ADI Study Clubs and Members’ National Forum
  • Free premium membership with Dentinal Tubules
  • Free access to research journals, COIR and EDI Journal
  • 50 free patient information leaflets
  • Free implant assessment template on Kiroku
  • Free access to the ADI Members’ Facebook Page
  • Discounted rates to the ADI Team Congress, Masterclasses and Focus Meetings

There is also a First Five Years Membership option for clinicians who are new to dental implantology in the UK, which includes free membership for the initial 2 years post GDC registration. The Next Gen Committee has also recently been introduced, which is designed to provide education and networking specifically for individuals who are newer to the field.

When asked what it means to be the future President of the ADI, George commented:

“This is probably the highlight of my ADI career. I’ve been on committee since 2016, and have performed roles as Regional Representative for about 4 years and Treasurer for another 4 years. Being voted in as President Elect is recognition of the work I have done on behalf of the association and I am honoured to be taking this on.

“Every President puts their own personal stamp on the role and I look forward to doing the same. We’ve had Presidents with general dental backgrounds, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, periodontists – I am more focused on implantology directly, offering the full range of procedures including soft and hard tissue procedures, single and full arch treatment. I’m looking forward to applying my own experience to the role of President. I am also particularly proud to be the first Indian President of the ADI – there have been others of Indian descent, but I will be the first to have been born and grown up in India. I believe this reflects the diversity of the ADI and it demonstrates the opportunities available to those from various different backgrounds.”

No matter your background, your experience to date or your ambitions for a career in dental implantology, the ADI is a place of development, support and comradery. Whether you’re looking for a mentor or inspiration to progress, opportunities to develop your skills or engage with some of the biggest names in the field, the ADI can help. Smiles at Sea returns to Cornwall and Devon for seventh consecutive year

Between 14th September and 14th December 2023, fishermen and their dependent family members can access free dental checks, emergency treatment and oral cancer screening from a mobile dental unit in eight fishing ports across Cornwall and Devon. The treatment will relieve any immediate dental problems including simple tooth extraction, permanent fillings and scale and polish with referrals through NHS routes where more complex oral surgery is required.

These health events are made possible by Seafarers Hospital Society (SHS) and Smile Together, thanks to generous funding from the Department for Transport via the Merchant Navy Welfare Board. The events are delivered in partnership with The Fishermen’s Mission as part of their national SeaFit service, including their partner network of healthcare providers and charity partners, this award-winning partnership project is a fantastic example of integrated healthcare provision in coastal communities.

Discussing the project, Sandra Welch, Chief Executive Officer of SHS said “We are delighted to continue our support of the work of Smiles at Sea as part of SeaFit, and I truly believe this is an excellent example of how partners can collaborate together to bring health services to the quayside and make a real difference in our coastal communities.”

According to Alison Cane, Outreach Manager at Smile Together: “We’re passionate about tackling oral health inequality in our communities and this will be the seventh consecutive year that we have visited local harboursides across Cornwall and Devon to improve the oral health of fishermen and their families who so rarely get to see a dentist due to the demands of their work. Everyone who attends will receive one of our oral health packs including toothbrushes, toothpaste and a 2-minute timer along with top dental tips for all the family, signposting information to emergency dental care and healthy snacks, plus be entered into a free prize draw! We are also encouraging people to bring along their old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes and associated packaging for recycling through our commitment to Colgate TerraCycle. Everything you’d expect from a certified B Corporation doing business for good!”

Carol Elliott, Manager for The Fishermen’s Mission’s national SeaFit service, says: “We are thrilled to be partnering once again with Smile Together and making a difference in our South West coastal communities. We are able to visit even more harbourside locations this year where Healthy Cornwall will also be providing free health checks and, in most locations, we’ll also be joined by a range of SeaFit healthcare partners. We hope that by spreading the visits over a 4-month period this year, even more fishermen and their families will be able to access this vital care and ensure safety at sea.”

The 2023 #SmilesAtSeaUK tour starts in Newlyn on 14th September 2023, visiting 8 harbourside locations over 10 days until 14th December.

Smiles at Sea 2022 visited 5 harbourside locations over 8 days treating 103 fishermen (active and retired) and their dependent family members, 12% of whom hadn’t visited a dentist for 5 years or more. We did 37 fillings, 10 extractions/root removals, 25 scale and polish and 10 x-rays, with 13 patients referred for urgent care/complex urgent minor oral surgery and/or to Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust for suspected oral cancer. 99% rated our visit as excellent and said they’d visit us in 2023.

Last year Smile Together and the Fishermen’s Mission also created a ‘Checking for mouth cancer at sea’ video to encourage fishermen to regularly check for any unusual changes in the mouth between our annual harbourside visits.

Fishermen who attended Smiles at Sea in 2022 found it extraordinarily valuable with comments including: “Everyone was very helpful – glad I was home from sea otherwise would have been waiting another 4 years”, “Can’t thank you enough. It’s amazing”,10 out of 10. Very helpful and kind”, “‘Sociable as well as useful to see the dentist”.

Smiles at Sea partners are all national award-winners, most recently The Fishermen’s Mission winning at The Charity Awards 2023 and SeaFit winning Innovation of the Year at The Fishing News Awards 2023. Smiles at Sea itself is an award-winning programme having won Best Outreach or Charity Initiative in the national Dental Awards 2019 and shortlisted as Project of the Year in the Third Sector Business Charity Awards 2020.
