About the Course

Private orthodontics provider Yorkshire Orthodontics has opened a new practice in Roundhay, Leeds, to complement its existing one in Otley, West Yorkshire, as part of its strategic growth plan.

Yorkshire Orthodontics was founded in 2017 by four consultant and specialist orthodontists. The new Roundhay practice is on Street Lane within a detached period property with off street parking which was acquired and entirely refurbished as part of a £1m investment by the business.

As with the Otley practice, the Roundhay building features some of the latest dental technology including intraoral scanners and a cone beam CT scanner.

The practice takes referrals from general dentists seeking specialist orthodontic treatments for their patients, as well as accepting self-referrals from the general public.

Commenting on the new practice, Yorkshire Orthodontics partner, Dr Paul Scott, said: “We have a clear strategic growth plan for our business. It is based on opening high-quality, high specification practices in easily accessible locations providing patient-focused treatments delivered by specialists.

“Our Otley practice has proven to be tremendously successful and continues to be so. This has enabled our expansion into a central Roundhay location which allows us to further serve the people and dentists of Leeds and its surrounding areas.

“We are extremely pleased with both the level of interest and number of appointments we have already booked in at Roundhay.

“Our intention is to continue to raise awareness of Yorkshire Orthodontics’ distinct patient-centric approach as we grow the business within our current locations and beyond.”

About the Course

Smile Together Dental CIC was ‘highly commended’ in the ‘Public Services Social Enterprise of the Year’ category at the prestigious UK Social Enterprise Awards in London on Thursday 30th November.

The awards are hosted by national sector body Social Enterprise UK to recognise impact and innovation in purpose-led business across awards 15 categories.

Smile Together is an employee-owned certified B Corporation, in business to deliver exceptional patient dental care whilst tackling oral health inequality for healthier happier communities across the south west, and was also shortlisted in the ‘Community-Based Social Enterprise Award’ making it an exciting awards evening all-round for the team!

Jonathan Bouwer-Davies, Managing Director at Smile Together, said: “We are honoured to have our work recognised and be highly commended in these prestigious national awards. It’s a testament to the extraordinary contribution of our team who, together, resolutely deliver the highest levels of patient care alongside outstanding initiatives aimed at tackling oral health inequality across local communities. Our congratulations to all the inspirational, sector-leading social enterprises who were both shortlisted and recognised.”

Social enterprises are businesses that trade for a social or environmental purpose. There are an estimated 100,000 social enterprises in the UK contributing around £60bn annually to the UK economy and they are set up to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing society and the environment.

Peter Holbrook, Chief Executive of Social Enterprise UK, said: “The last year has been a difficult one for businesses across the UK, and it has been no different for social enterprises. The Awards were a real evening of hope and inspiration and brought home the sheer ingenuity, adaptability and determination of the social enterprise community, which has continued to deliver for the people and communities they work with and support.

“The winners include businesses which are breaking down barriers for groups marginalised in the workforce, organisations at the heart of local economies, and those finding innovative ways to tackle the climate crisis. The ever-growing movement of social enterprise truly represents business at its best.”

About the Course

On Saturday 25 November 2023, the College of General Dentistry held its first ‘NextGen’ event, part of a new initiative to raise awareness of its mission among dental students and early career professionals.

The CGDent NextGen Leadership Workshop, which took place in Manchester, was open to students on the Bachelor of Dental Surgery, BSc or DipHE Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy, BSc Clinical Dental Technology and BSc Dental Studies courses at the University of Manchester, the University of Liverpool, the University of Birmingham and the University of Central Lancashire, as well as Foundation Dentists and Foundation Dental Therapists in the North West region.

Successful applicants were awarded a fully funded place at the one-day workshop, which explored the skills required for effective leadership in dentistry, through a series of talks, workshops and discussion. The day focused on the five competencies in the Agency Domain of the College’s Professional Framework for Career Pathways in Dentistry: autonomy, decision-making, influence, leadership and management.

Supported by five College facilitators, the delegates were encouraged to examine the key leadership skills and consider how they could develop them through short-term, medium-term and long-term goals.

Christy, a BDS student at the University of Birmingham who took part in the day, said:

“It was great to meet the facilitators and other students there. Everyone was so welcoming, and the talks and activities were easily accessible – no matter what stage or area of dentistry we were in. I’ve learnt multiple ways to develop my skill set, information about the College of General Dentistry and thoroughly look forward to future events.”

Many of those who attended the workshop have become NextGen Ambassadors for the College, with the aim of raising awareness within their communities of CGDent’s mission and of the career support it offers to dental professionals.

The College wishes to thank the students and Foundation Trainees who enthusiastically took part in the day; the workshop facilitators who generously gave their time and expertise (Phillip Brown, Poppy Dunton, Roshni Karia, Abhi Pal and Sir Nairn Wilson); and the University of Manchester, University of Liverpool, University of Birmingham, University of Central Lancashire and Health Education North West for their support.
