The British Dental Industry Association (BDIA) has announced a new collaboration with leading handpiece manufacturers Bien-Air, KaVo, NSK and W&H to help dental professionals make informed decisions about handpiece repairs and maintenance.
The initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of using original manufacturer spare parts when repairing dental handpieces and to provide clear guidance for practices, procurement teams and clinicians responsible for purchasing and maintaining these essential devices.
Patient safety and clinical performance are at the heart of the campaign. While generic spare parts are known to be used in handpiece repairs, their use may fundamentally alter the original construction of the device and can transfer responsibility away from the original manufacturer. More importantly, it may compromise the safety, reliability and performance of the handpiece, potentially putting both patients and dental professionals at risk.
Through this joint initiative, the BDIA and its manufacturing partners are encouraging practices to fully understand what is being used in their repairs and to make informed purchasing decisions based on quality, safety and compliance.
The campaign will be shared across the dental sector and with key professional and regulatory organisations, including the British Dental Association (BDA), General Dental Council (GDC), Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Care Quality Commission (CQC).
To support the initiative, the BDIA and participating manufacturers will deliver an extensive awareness campaign across the dental media.
