Democratising dental treatments

Dr Stefen Koubi is a highly accomplished dentist based in France. Since graduating from University of Marseille in 1998, Dr Koubi has led a trailblazing career. This includes founding L’institut de la facette, a private training centre focused on smile design for worn dentition and cosmetic rehabilitation, and authoring Laminate Veneers: 20 Recipes for Success. More recently, Dr Koubi co-founded Lupin Dental, a robotic company that enables clinicians to execute complex treatments with precision.

With a range of achievements that position him at the forefront of technological change within dentistry, Dr Koubi brings immense knowledge and skills and the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) is thrilled to host him as a speaker at the BACD 22^nd Annual Conference in November. With so much change in the world of cosmetic dentistry, Dr Koubi understands the current challenges, stating:

“The two big obstacles right now are predictability and repeatability. For predictably, when patients are looking for improvements in their appearance – a highly subjective topic – they need to know what the final outcome will be. With repeatability, the treatments you perform must be consistent and minimally invasive, with reliable support from the dental technicians at the laboratory.

“I think many dentists today are not performing smile treatments well enough because they overcomplicate things, such as the smile design. Further, patients value their time and the idea of multiple appointments for a treatment is far less preferable compared to a singular visit that delivers the treatment – this is becoming more possible through the emergence of state-of-the-art robotics.”

Robotic revolution

At the BACD 22^nd Annual Conference, Dr Koubi will be delivering a talk that will give attendees practical skills and information to take back to the dental practice and enhance their daily workflow. He outlines its content:

“The lecture will explain a rational approach, from inception to treatment, on how to simplify appointments for clinicians, starting with simplified aesthetic treatments and how this then makes it more affordable for the patient too. This will mean greater repeatability, with focus on a specific guided technique that improves precision and control – no free handing.

“The purpose is to give attendees that feeling that they can tackle complex cosmetic dental treatments themselves; to feel empowered when returning to the practice on Monday morning. It will also be an exciting debut for a new, very complex software that I have co-founded through Lupin Dental. I will demonstrate its use in the hope that it democratises treatments by simplifying them. Its unique accuracy and practical application will make one-and-done appointments a reality and I am excited to share it at the conference.”

The hottest ticket in town

Dr Koubi’s history with the BACD began during the pandemic. He reflects on the time since:

“The BACD came into my orbit about 6 years ago, at a time where there were plenty of restrictions and the idea of a big, in-person event felt like a thing of the past. I am very pleased to be returning this year as part of the incredible educational programme that the BACD has organised. There is so much potential regarding cosmetic dentistry right now, and the UK is in an exciting position to meet the trends and demand of patients. For instance, the popularity of the composite veneer – how can we simplify these treatments? Or, how can we better determine when it is suitable for a patient by accounting for aspects like age, finance, or whether they want one appointment or multiple? It is this level of discussion that makes the BACD a great ecosystem for learning.
