With the British Endodontic Society (BES) Regional Meeting coming up in November, Dr Melanie Kidner shares what attendees can expect when they take part in her table clinic:

“Delegates will learn about the nature and prevalence of compromised first permanent molars in children. We’ll be discussing critical factors influencing decisions, such as restorability, patient cooperation, and optimal extraction timing. Additionally, the relevance of malocclusion and the development of the Thames Valley Orthodontic Managed Clinical Network and Royal College of Surgeons Clinical Guidelines will be covered.

“This comprehensive overview will provide delegates with the knowledge and confidence needed for treatment planning and obtaining informed consent. The uncertanties about onward referral for uncooperative patients will highlight the importance of timely attempts at treatment and stabilisation, within the general practice setting if possible.

“Attendees will benefit from the small group setting facilitated by a table clinic session as it lends itself to informal discussion around the subject area covered. The theories relating to the ideal timing for compromised first permanent molar extractions and balancing/compensating extractions has led to difficulties with treatment planning decisions for dentists. In addition, NHS eligibility and the scope of orthodontics is not always apparent to dentists as it depends on the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN) and the presenting occlusion. This presentation aims to clarify these points, facilitate patient care and improve outcomes.”
