Good dentistry is not just about fixing problems for patients. Adopting a tailored approach can flip the way patients see a visit to the dental practice, emphasising that a consistent daily oral hygiene routine can prevent a large number of dental problems occurring in the first place, from caries to gingivitis.

A proactive approach to oral self-care involves regular toothbrushing and interdental cleaning. However, disparities in oral care are notable – male patients, in particular, are less likely to floss and 60% will avoid treatment even when they may have a serious problem. This is further compounded by the patients who do seek care, and then are less likely to adhere to any recommended treatments compared to their female counterparts.[i]

Boost patient engagement

The iTOP programme from Curaden helps dental professionals reframe and rethink the approach on prevention and apply behaviour change concepts to better engage patients with their oral health, as well as demonstrating oral hygiene techniques to help them achieve this. The goal is to better connect patients with their mouth, refine their own technique, gain confidence, understand the positive effect they can have on their oral self-care and ultimately have a healthier mouth and smile.

There are three iTOP courses available to UK dental professionals, with both the Introductory and Implant Introductory being accredited by the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT):

Introductory

The iTOP Introductory course provides a comprehensive gateway to the iTOP philosophy of using an individualised and tailored approach to patient oral self-care Focusing on biofilm management, patient engagement and motivation techniques, it blends theoretical elements with practical workshops, detailing how to adopt and optimise the iTOP approach in practice with patients for more effective and improved oral care outcomes.

Implant Introductory

Designed for DHCPs involved with dental implant treatments, the Implant Introductory course covers iTOP core principles and how to apply these to the patient implant journey, from pre-surgery through to long-term maintenance. It covers biofilm management challenges specific to implants, peri-implant disease risks and post-surgery implant care. Combining theory and practical workshops, this course is designed to help DHCPs motivate and coach patients on oral self-care techniques specific for implants and successful long-term care and maintenance.

Advanced

The next step for those who complete the Introductory course, the iTOP Advanced is a two-day residential course. It’s defined by the highly personalised learning environment: smaller groups, tailored coaching and direct feedback and interaction. Through a mix of theory and workshops, delegates will achieve a practical mastery of communication skills, discuss how patients think about and perceive oral health, learn how to adopt behavioural change strategies, and refine oral care techniques that will lead to long lasting patient change and enhanced oral health.

At the core of iTOP is Touch 2 Teach, a practical workshop element to demonstrate what the optimal techniques for toothbrushing and interdental cleaning look like. Delegates get to think like a patient and refine their own techniques – the goal being they are better placed to pass these skills onto their patients. It sounds simple, but patients may not understand what good oral care technique looks like, so dental professionals need to support, coach and upskill them – to think like a patient to better help the patient.

Product power

Along with the educational benefits, each iTOP course introduces delegates to the premium oral care products from Curaprox to demonstrate how these can make a positive impact on a patient’s oral health. From the CPS interdental brush range, which effectively removes trapped food debris from the interdental spaces, to the CS 5460 toothbrush, which harnesses ultra-fine Curen® filaments for a gentle cleaning routine, the Curaprox product range elevates patient care.

Dental professionals who complete an iTOP course also receive a curated gift bag of premium Curaprox products, ensuring attendees can immediately apply their new knowledge and skills. This gift bag includes a selection of CPS interdental brushes and a Hydrosonic Pro, the powerful and professional electric toothbrush from Curaprox that delivers a customisable and comprehensive cleaning experience.

Completing an iTOP course deepens the dental professional patient relationship. A huge impact can be seen in daily practice once you apply iTOP teachings, reflecting your commitment to improving oral health. iTOP ultimately revolutionises patient recall, creating a new, preventive culture that drives better oral care outcomes for outstanding and long-lasting patient care.
