A unique art exhibition, The Smile Within, will take place at the British Dental Conference & Dentistry Show at the NEC Birmingham on 15–16 May 2026, aligning with Mental Health Awareness Week. The exhibition will shine a spotlight on mental health and wellbeing within the dental profession while raising vital funds for two leading charities.
The initiative brings together the BDA Benevolent Fund and Bridge2Aid in a collaborative effort to support dental professionals and underserved communities globally.
Addressing Mental Health in Dentistry
While dentistry is a highly rewarding profession, it is also associated with significant pressures, including stress, isolation, and emotional strain. The Smile Within aims to foster open conversations around mindfulness, resilience, and emotional wellbeing through the universal language of art.
Laura Hannon, CEO of the BDA Benevolent Fund, said:
“Mental health is a critical issue in dentistry, and we want to ensure that no dental professional feels alone when facing challenges. This exhibition is a creative way to raise awareness and funds, while celebrating resilience and wellbeing in our profession.”
Honouring a Lasting Legacy
The exhibition was conceived by John Ulahannan, a former Trustee of the BDA Benevolent Fund, who sadly passed away unexpectedly. His passion for art and advocacy for mental health in dentistry inspired the creation of this event, which seeks to honour his legacy and encourage meaningful dialogue.
Shaenna Loughnane, CEO of Bridge2Aid, added:
“Art has the power to connect people and spark conversations. By supporting this event, people will be helping us continue our mission to provide sustainable dental care in communities that need it most. Together, we can make a lasting impact, both locally and globally.”
