Haptic technology and virtual reality (VR) has seen an unstoppable rise in the last decade, meeting the demands for exciting experiences across a range of industries. Haptic and VR technologies are expanding opportunities for healthcare, improving professional training and education.
From dental students to specialists, the precision and interactivity of clinical training and patient care has been significantly enhanced through the integration of haptic and VR technologies, offering detailed and immersive simulations with haptic feedback that improves skills. The emergence of UNI SIM, as covered in a recent article in The Times (‘Moment of tooth: the Haptic & VR company revolutionising dental training’),[i] provides practitioners with the opportunity to practise their skills – without the need of a patient or expensive 3D printed teeth.
Supplying success
Clark Dental is delighted to supply UNI SIM and Virteasy technology to dental training centres and practices in the UK, having already installed models at places including Altrincham Health and Wellbeing Centre, Manchester, where six simulators are being used as part of an NHS pilot site. In addition, Glasgow Dental School and The Oral Health Institute will be receiving simulators too.
As the only company in the UK with three trainers, a helpdesk, and experienced field engineers, Clark Dental has positioned themselves as a reliable supplier of UNI SIM & Virteasy products. Further, Clark Dental is proud to extend their service to Scandinavia, covering Denmark, Norway and Sweden, as well as Finland, delivering ground-breaking technology at an international level and helping European dentists elevate their skills and confidence. James Elliott, Regional Sales Director at Clark Dental, highlighted the role the team plays:
“At Clark Dental, we are proud to supply Virteasy and UNI SIM simulators. These advanced tools help train new dentists and allow experienced clinicians to learn new treatments. Haptics and virtual reality are proving valuable in dental education, and Virteasy & UNI SIM demonstrate this effectively.”
There are three Virteasy simulators: Virteasy Pro, Virteasy Desktop, and Virteasy Portable.
The world’s first portable dental training simulator for dentists that can be moved around easily, Unisim Portable delivers an immersive and practical way of honing clinical skills. Inside each set is a high-performance laptop with the optimal processing power for a seamless experience, Meta Quest 3 VR headset, a foot pedal, an ergonomic finger rest, and a 3D touch system with a haptic stylus.
Designed at a convenient size, UNI SIM is available with either 1 or 2 haptic modes. Here, the flexible arm and stylus mimics a dental instrument (which can be quickly changed on the screen and used with a foot pedal) and is used to navigate and treat a virtual patient’s mouth, with the ability to deliver lifelike tissue resistance and tactile cues during simulated procedures. A second haptic arm enables a full multi-handed experience, whilst optimising space.
Added on options
The realistic environment, brought to life through a haptic and a VR headset, plays host to over 250 training exercises. This includes: implantology, endodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics, dental hygiene, extractions and much more, lending itself to a full application of techniques and treatments.
Virteasy Assistant is an add-on software that supports simulator training, helping to manage students, monitor screens, provide student feedback and be evaluated by the teacher. For a more advanced training programme, Virteasy Editor enables users to import scans, create exercises and quizzes, and harness 3D design for a comprehensive educational experience.
For a system you can take anywhere, the Virteasy Portable is stored in a Peli Air 1615, a light yet protective case that blends practicality with strength. Secure and innovative, it is watertight, has a pressure-equalising valve, and TSA-approved latches – it’s ideal for air transport if the simulator needs taking to training days, conferences or remote sites.
Future application
The possibilities of haptics and VR technology are continuing to grow. A trusted way of enhancing clinical techniques, the UNI SIM range of Virteasy simulators answers the question ‘is there a safer way to level-up the skills for the next generation of dentists?’ The portable design and ease of use make the simulator a training essential, one that will ultimately lead to first-class patient care.
As a supplier of state-of-the-art dental technology, Clark Dental guarantees a superb service, from installation to servicing and ongoing maintenance support. As the dental industry continues to embrace the exciting potential of virtual reality, choose Clark Dental to deliver transformative equipment.
