In 2025, Dr Kieron Taylor received the Harty Essay Prize from the British Endodontic Society (BES). He describes his motivations for entering this award, and his experience of winning:
“I graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2025, and I’m currently working as a general dentist in Birmingham. I applied for the Harty Essay Prize because I have always had an interest in research and scientific writing, but never really knew where to start. I thought that this would be a good opportunity to deepen my knowledge of endodontics and, hopefully, receive a prize for it!
“I was buzzing when I found out that I had won and my effort had paid off. The prizes were a year-long membership with the BES, an invitation to the Regional Meeting, and a cash prize of £1,000. Winning the award made for a nice addition to my CV, which is incredibly important to me at this stage of my career.
“I would absolutely encourage anyone eligible to enter for this award. Even if you don’t win, you’ll learn a lot through researching the essay topic that can be implemented in your everyday practise. I’d recommend starting early and chipping away at the essay over time. 3,000 words might seem daunting at the start but, by the end, you’ll wish the word count were higher!
“I’d like to say thank you to the BES for the recognition and for hosting such a wonderful event in November. I’m looking forward to what they’ve got in store for this year.”
