The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Spyros Vassilopoulos as its new President. He succeeds Prof. Moritz Kebschull and brings to the role a strategic vision focused on advancing periodontal science, strengthening education, and building impactful alliances within and beyond the dental community.
“As EFP President, my priority is to expand the federation’s reach and influence. This includes improving communication with members and stakeholders, promoting periodontal health education, strengthening partnerships and embedding sustainability into our practices”, he states. “Attracting a new generation of leaders, enhancing governance and operations, and diversifying revenue streams are also key to ensuring the EFP’s long-term financial stability. Ultimately, my goal is to reinforce the EFP’s leadership in promoting ‘Better oral health for all’ across Europe and worldwide”, he notes.
The EFP is a non-profit organisation representing 44 national periodontal societies and plays a leading role in promoting oral health and awareness of periodontal science on a global scale—from Europe to Latin America, Asia, Africa and Oceania.
Prof. Vassilopoulos is assistant professor in the department of periodontology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece. He has been an executive member of the board of the Hellenic Society for Periodontology and Implant Dentistry (HSP) since 2009, EFP representative since 2017 and he is the current HSP’s President elect. His presidency will prioritise global engagement, youth leadership, innovation and sustainability across all levels of the organisation.
A major highlight of his presidency will be the EuroPerio11 congress, the world’s leading congress in periodontology and implant dentistry, set to take place in Vienna from 14 to 17 May 2025. The event will feature the latest scientific insights, foster collaboration, promote patient engagement, and explore the critical connections between oral health and overall health.
“EuroPerio11 will be a milestone for the EFP and its new strategic plan, showcasing the latest scientific breakthroughs, delivering world-class education, encouraging partnerships, and raising public awareness of periodontal health”, Vassilopoulos says.
“I am committed to building on the EFP’s strong foundation, with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity. I encourage everyone to actively engage with our initiatives, leverage the EFP’s expertise, and reach broader audiences. Together, we can shape the future of periodontal health.”
