The MPS Foundation has announced that it is hosting a symposium – Avoiding the AI ‘Off-Switch’: Make AI Work for Clinicians, to Deliver for Patients – aimed at deepening understanding of the risks and benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how AI tools can be safely incorporated into dental and medical practice.
The online event on 29 April 2025, follows the publication of a ground-breaking White Paper – a collaboration between the MPS Foundation, the Centre for Assuring Autonomy at the University of York and the Improvement Academy hosted at the Bradford Institute for Health – which called on policy makers, AI developers and regulators to ensure AI tools are integrated into healthcare delivery in a way that is usable, useful, and safe for patients and clinicians.
This symposium will discuss the application of AI and the legal and ethical challenges it poses for clinicians, while providing insights and strategies for clinicians to confidently leverage AI for decision making.
The speakers include Professor Tom Lawton from Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who will discuss clinician attitudes to AI use and responsibility; Professor Ibrahim Habli from the Centre for Assuring Autonomy, on why AI must work for clinicians; and Professor Philip Morgan from the University of York, who will explore the legal challenges including liability and consent.
Prof Gozie Offiah, Chair of the MPS Foundation, who is hosting the event, said: “AI carries the potential to transform healthcare delivery. For dentistry this means lessening the administrative burden, optimising clinical workflows, streamlining administrative tasks, increasing efficiency, and offering clinical decision support systems.
“This symposium is being held at a time when artificial intelligence is evolving at an unprecedented pace. However, this rapid integration also raises complex ethical, legal, and clinical questions. We at MPS are committed to helping clinicians reap the benefits and offer advice and support to manage the emergent risks.”

The MPS Foundation, along with Dental Protection, is part of the wider Medical Protection Society. The Foundation was established by MPS in 2022 to fund research in dentistry and medicine aimed at improving patient safety and clinician wellbeing.
