For dentists looking to advance their clinical skills and move into the field of full mouth rehabilitation, there are many surgical techniques, materials and technologies to become familiar with. Learning more about evidence-based protocols from fellow clinicians is a great place to start, especially when they are recognised as one of the leading lights in the field.
One such clinician is Dr Emanuele Cicero, a Specialist Prosthodontist who completed his speciality training in the US. His passion for aesthetic dentistry has seen him practise and teach around the globe, including in Italy, Spain, Brazil, the US and the UK. He will bring his expertise within the field of full mouth reconstruction to London in November as one of the highly-anticipated speakers at the BACD 20th Annual Conference. Emanuele says:
“The goal of full mouth rehabilitation is the long-term restoration of enhancement of a functional and aesthetic dentition. It can be a very challenging and controversial treatment and so there are many clinicians that don’t provide it at all. The reality is that there are many separate prosthetic procedures involved that must be controlled in order to achieve a predictable result. Many appointments can be exhausting for the patient and the clinician, and it can become increasingly difficult to manage the case. I have created a technique that standardises this process in order to reduce the number of appointments required for this treatment to 8-10.”
In his session entitled “Complete Mouth Rehabilitation in Fixed Prosthodontics: An Individualised Approach”, Emanuele will explore his protocols for successful full arch reconstruction in fewer appointments. In particular, he will focus on the importance of treatment planning and sequencing, as well as the benefits of a digital workflow, to ensure long-lasting functional and aesthetic outcomes for patients. He says:
“During my lecture, I will explain the prosthodontic treatment planning process in complex full arch reconstructions from a to z, emphasising the importance of individualisation according to the patient’s specific facial type and skeletal classification. It is important to understand these fundamentals in order to utilise the right digital technologies and materials for the best and most predictable clinical results. Only then can a fully digital workflow be successfully implemented to prosthetically enhance and restore dento-facial harmony through fixed full mouth rehabilitation. ”
“I will also break the systemic approach down according to class I, class II and class III skeletal classifications, demonstrating cases where orthognathic surgeries are necessary. Furthermore, I will discuss how to set functional and aesthetic guidelines, enabling delegates to understand which ceramics or clinical approaches to use in which cases. It’s about simplifying the steps for full mouth reconstruction as much as possible for clinicians to confidently deliver predictable treatment.”
“Importantly, I will try to show clinical reality – what I do in practice every day. I will also cover the procedure in depth. This is crucial when learning about a new technique and will allow delegates to see an overview of how to treat patients who present with different scenarios. This is not a topic discussed very broadly so I think it will be interesting for UK colleagues and I look forward to sharing it with you.”
The BACD Annual Conference 2024 will once again bring an array of highly-esteemed speakers from around the world, exposing delegates to a diverse range of ideas, perspectives and clinical techniques. But more than this, it creates an environment for connection, networking and community. As such, it is a fantastic opportunity to see friends, meet new people and be inspired by colleagues who are doing amazing ethical cosmetic dentistry.
Commenting on why the BACD Annual Conference is such a fantastic platform for sharing information and engaging with others, Emanuele adds:
“I have heard that the BACD Annual Conference is one of the greatest dental meetings in the UK, with a lot of highly experienced colleagues participating. It is an opportunity to share my passion for the field with peers, in particular, my focus on full mouth reconstruction. It also looks unique in that there are so many young, talented clinicians involved, providing plenty of opportunity for us all to learn from each other.”
“Multidisciplinary dentistry is all about exchanging experiences and knowledge among clinicians. When you combine this with good, positive and constructive energy, it can lead to a great improvement for all of us. No-one knows everything, so interacting with others is crucial. I’m excited to attend the BACD Annual Conference 2024 and engage with many colleagues there.”
