Let’s put a smile on that face

The same-day smile can provide patients with an aesthetic result that doesn’t require multiple appointments. Combining different treatments like composite bonding and tooth whitening, the same-day smile is an effective solution for those dissatisfied with their smile aesthetic. But the conventional process can be imperfect – digital dentistry helps to correct this while promoting a minimally invasive approach.
Dr Jameel Gardee is an accomplished cosmetic dentist. As Clinical Director of his own practice and a Digital Smile Design Master, Jameel has been paving the way for positive, digitally-driven change in aesthetic dentistry. From lecturing on smile design with Avant Garde to producing innovative practice management solutions, Jameel is well aware of the challenges that clinicians face when transitioning to a fully digital workflow for same-day smile design:
“Using new technology can mean there are issues with learning a different workflow. Clinicians have to be familiar with the hardware and the software, but before that they must know which hardware or software to buy. So a lot of the challenges are in relation to ‘which equipment should I buy?’ and then ‘how can I use it in the best possible way?’”
“However, the benefits of mastering new technologies are many, as your work can be easier, as well as more streamlined, accurate and predictable. From the patient perspective, the added comfort creates a better experience, and this cannot be underestimated.”
The BACD 20th Annual Conference will spotlight same-day smile design and the importance of new technologies. Jameel will present a workshop, entitled “Same Day Smile: FirstFit Fully-Guided Solution”, on Thursday 7th November. Jameel details what he hopes to address:
“I will be talking about a digital preparation system for teeth. Just like implant surgery where you use guides for correct placement, we can, in restorative dentistry, use digitally designed guides and handpieces to prepare the teeth in an appropriate manner. These preparations can make our workflows much easier and more controlled, supporting truly minimally invasive dentistry.
“There will be other experts with us on Thursday 7th, such as Dr Robbie Hughes, who is one of the foremost cosmetic dentists in the UK, and Dr Carlos Toro, the Head of FirstFit Academy in Spain, who will be conducting the hands-on session. The delegates will therefore get a comprehensive experience with the FirstFit system that we are hoping they will add to their armoury.”
On what delegates will take away from the session and how it will change their daily work, Jameel says:
“I would hope that an understanding of minimally invasive dentistry from a restorative aspect will be taken away. The principles that delegates will learn can improve how they think about preparing teeth and designing smiles. I would like to see clinicians utilising digitally guided systems to streamline their practices. This is the gold standard of treating patients and I hope these fundamentals are understood so that we can practice a way of dentistry that best preserves the patient’s dental health. I would also hope the session provides clinicians with a better understanding of the FirstFit system.”
On the need for excellent cosmetic dentistry, Jameel details the current problems facing clinicians:
“Patients are often making poor choices and going abroad for a smile treatment. These treatments can often be overtreatments that obliterate the teeth. We are complaining as a profession without finding an alternative. Same-day smiles should be accessible for everybody in a minimally invasive way that is customisable and easy to understand for patient and practitioner.
“World-class dentistry is something we can all achieve if we follow the right protocols. We must find more affordable solutions that do not sacrifice quality but take away the need for our patients to go abroad and get treatments that aren’t in their best interests.”
Jameel looks back on his long-lasting relationship with the BACD and what makes the Annual Conference the biggest event on the calendar:
“I was very fortunate to attend the very first BACD Conference 20 years ago. I have watched on as its grown into the premier source of dental education for ethical cosmetic dentistry in the UK. The Annual Conferences are always first-class; the quality and knowledge of the speakers is wonderful. It is great to be surrounded by so many highly experienced clinicians whilst learning practical techniques that can be taken away and utilised on a Monday morning for all. I look forward to seeing you all there!”
Jameel’s eye-opening session is one of many high-profile workshops that the BACD 20th Annual Conference is hosting. Besides the excellent networking opportunities, the Gala Dinner will be an unmissable Masquerade Ball with a free bar, a delicious dinner and plenty of entertainment.
