Utilising orthodontics for better outcomes

Generally, orthodontics is considered a specialised part of dentistry that requires training to master before taking on complex cases. This makes sense – realigning dentition often comes with a number of challenges, especially if the teeth are especially crowded and need extensive repositioning.

In some situations, alignment of the teeth is beneficial prior to other types of procedures, such as implant placement or minimal-prep crowns. There are also training programmes and appliances designed for general dental practitioners (GDPs) interested in treating milder cases. These, combined with modern digital technologies, mean that orthodontics is now something that can be utilised by dentists across the board – opening the door to better aesthetics, easier treatment and more reliable outcomes for patients.

Exploring this, Dr Stéphane Reinhardt and Dr Karla Soto will be presenting a session at this year’s BACD Annual Conference.

Speaking about the session, Stéphane explained why he thinks moving teeth is so important and how utilising clear aligners can make all the difference:

“Imagine if the teeth in our mouths were made of soft wax instead of bone and could easily be manipulated and moved with our fingers. How many times would you move the teeth before doing anything else? How often would you incorporate this step into your treatment planning to help facilitate better outcomes? It would be absolutely incredible, and so useful in a number of cases where the position of the dentition can hinder the treatment we’re trying to perform.

“We may not be able to move teeth with just our thumbs, but with modern day technologies, repositioning teeth is a lot more accessible than we think. Any tooth movement is orthodontics, which can often put professionals off from exploring solutions such as clear aligners, as we’ve always been told that orthodontics is a complicated part of dentistry that we need to dedicate our whole lives to in order to become proficient. This really isn’t the case anymore.”

As Director of Education of the C.L.E.A.R. Institute, Dr Reinhardt has years of experience harnessing the powers of clear aligners. He continues:

“Digital orthodontics and the use of clear aligners has changed the life of patients across the globe. In my session with Dr Karla Soto, I want to really show delegates the benefits of using these solutions and how they can go the extra mile in ensuring outstanding cosmetic treatment.

“I want to stretch the legs of what Invisalign can do – or, even better – what we can do with Invisalign. Those who attend the session will learn how to use clear aligners in a more dynamic way, not just using them for simple orthodontic cases but also how to implement them in a more holistic treatment plan for better outcomes.”

This session is just one of the many exceptional educational lectures on offer at this year’s BACD Annual Conference. The theme of this year’s show is “On The Shoulders Of Giants,” which accurately portrays how the dentists of today can learn from the breakthroughs of those who came before them, and from other experts in the industry. By offering a fantastic array of educational content, hands-on workshops and invaluable content for professionals in all roles, the Annual Conference 2022 is guaranteed to be one to remember.

Plus, there will be various networking opportunities for everyone to get involved with and connect with others. In addition to the trade exhibition, there will be several social events, including the highly anticipated black-tie Gala Dinner where you are invited to A Winter Wonderland of fire and ice – with a free bar!

Dr Reinhardt comments about his excitement about the show and the opportunities it presents, saying:

“Ultimately, what we need to remember is that smiles have never been as important to people as they are now, there’s never been a better time to be a dentist and there’s no better place to be than on the shoulders of giants! Don’t miss out and make sure that you register to attend the BACD Annual Conference now!”

The BACD Annual takes place on November 10-12 at the ICC in Newport, Wales.
