All members of the dental team can look forward to an outstanding programme at the BACD Annual Conference 2022. Combining eclectic lectures, hands-on workshops, a trade exhibition and various social events, the event truly has something for anyone with an interest in cosmetic and high-quality dentistry.

Dr Thomas Sealey will present a hands-on workshop with Dr Mide Ojo as part of the day-one programme. Entitled “Smilefast activation course: a new workflow in delivering direct composite restorations”, their session will introduce the system and its implications for composite smile makeovers.

Sharing how and why the techniques he will discuss could help dentists, Thomas comments:

“SmileFast has been designed by real working dentists who have struggled with the complexities of using composite resin for anterior smile makeovers. It is a time-consuming and highly technique- and skill-dependent procedure that is often avoided due to concerns over the stress it causes, and the time taken to complete it. However, with the revolutionary SmileFast stent, clinicians can place up to 10 composite veneers directly onto patients’ teeth in just one application.

“This is done directly with heated resin composite rather than the inferior flowable that most techniques advocate. With the unique characteristics of pre-separation (separators built within the stent itself), the final veneers are already separated and therefore the case just requires marginal finishing and refining to complete it. This results in considerable savings in time, and also reduces the stress for the dentist. All this means that the end-cost to the patient can be reduced significantly, offering them a cheaper alternative to ceramics or hand-placed direct composites (both of which are more time-consuming and skill-dependent).”

Thomas goes on to reflect upon what areas colleagues tend to find difficult when approaching direct composite restorations:

“It’s very clear that a large proportion of clinicians struggle with both the concepts and applications of smile design, as well as with a broad understanding of occlusion and parafunction, and the negative consequences of this impact a composite smile makeover. Having access to mentors who can review and assess cases while the dentist learns the techniques for composite smile makeovers can guide them through complex smile design and case management with ease. It can also highlight cases that require complex management when the dentist can‘t see why themselves. This support helps to avoid misdiagnosis of a critical complicating factor such as occlusal issues caused through parafunction, or another underlying disease process. SmileFast mentors do all this and more, warning of potential pitfalls for specific cases and communicating with clinicians to advise them on appropriate treatment solutions.”

Delegates will receive a link to a summary of key learning points via a virtual session that offers 2.5 hours of CPD prior to the BACD workshop. This will cover the rationale and science behind SmileFast, as well as go into modern adhesive techniques and materials. About the hands-on session at the event, Thomas adds:

“The 4 hour in-person workshop will move onto the real-life situation of a SmileFast Direct 6-unit veneer makeover placement, practised on a typodont model. It will include the step-by-step preparation and placement procedure using heated composite resin and our patented SmileFast pre-separated stent. By the end of the workshop, and with the additional resources we provide, delegates will be confident to start taking their patients along the SmileFast journey of planning and delivering a new and improved smile.

“Whether you are a new dentist or a highly experienced one, SmileFast can offer you a more streamlined and simpler pathway to deliver smile makeovers. The expectation from our courses has always been to learn how our stent differs from what has come before, but people always leave congratulating us on not just this unique stent and technique, but also on the efficient and easily accessible pathway toward the planning and consenting for elective cosmetic procedures. It’s a truly well-rounded project that has changed many dentists’ lives and career directions for the better.”

This will be the 18th Annual Conference that the BACD has presented to the profession and the theme is “On The Shoulders Of Giants”. It will provide three days of exceptional education, delivered by a speaker line-up of unrivalled calibre. Considering his personal experience of attending the event in the past, Thomas says:

“Not only does the BACD have world-class speakers and a varied range of educational workshops, it also hosts some excellent vendors and fantastic social events. It’s a great opportunity to learn, explore new technologies and techniques, as well as meet friends and let your hair down. A great event that always exceeds expectations.”

Thomas and Mide will be just two of many exceptional speakers for delegates to hear from. Dr Frank Spear will be headlining on day two of the event, venturing across the pond to give a full day lecture on “The Art of Treatment Planning”.
