In every area of dentistry, there are certain skills that professionals should hone in order to ensure that they are providing an excellent standard of treatment.

Bearing this in mind, the BACD Annual Conference 2022 will be hosting a special session that focuses on a selection of this skills, helping delegates to truly get to grips with certain fundamentals so that they can tackle every clinical situation.

Presented by Ferdi Chum and Ajay Dhunna, this session is inspired by their popular Trinity Dental Course and will teach both new and experienced professionals alike the ins and outs of skills such as isolation, dental photography and posterior resin restoration.

Ferdi comments:

“Our hands-on session is here to help ensure that professionals of all skill levels will have the knowledge and confidence to perform everyday dentistry to the highest possible standards. It is based on the trinity of the basic skills we believe young dentists should master, with the session covering not only practical techniques but how to document these through good quality dental photography.

“In the isolation segment, we’ll start by teaching professionals the most efficient way to perform basic isolations such as those in the posterior quadrant. Following this, we’ll move onto more complex scenarios, addressing concepts like subgingival isolation and cementation isolation. This way we’ll cover the vast majority of isolation needs that dentists will come across in everyday practice.

“We’ll also be taking a close look at dental photography. Good quality photographs are paramount for career progression, and it’s not only valuable to be able to reflect on your work but also to document cases and submit them for BACD Accreditation. Plus, photography is not just for your records, it is also for patient communication and consent. Capturing the workflow is great for showcasing to our colleagues, but also to allow our patients to see the care we put into our work. Most importantly, it helps in co-diagnosis and risk discussion, allowing our patients to see how well we executed the treatment but also how difficult it can be so that they understand the treatment journey more comprehensively. In our session, we’ll be teaching delegates how to capture every type of photograph they need for everyday dental photography, from simple workflow photos to those ever so troublesome occlusal photos.

“Lastly, our session will also put the spotlight on posterior resin restoration. This aspect of the course is not just standard occlusal morphology and incremental build-up techniques. We want delegates to learn the foundations of strong direct composite restorations that will stand the test of time as well as provide excellent aesthetics. Combining literature-based protocols with a hands-on approach, this segment will provide professionals with everything they need to create restorations in a simple and efficient manner and with the knowledge to tackle any clinical situation. We’ll also be exploring deep margin elevation and matrixing techniques as well!”

With such an array of skills and information on offer, this hands-on session is a must-attend for professionals of all skill levels who want to hone their techniques.

Ferdi continues:

“The main things we want delegates to take away from our session is the ability to understand and document their workflow, utilising a trinity of skills that will make their daily dentistry exceptional. We will be covering how to ensure that treatment is carried out under gold standard conditions, for long-lasting, outstanding results – all skills that people can implement in practice straight away.”

When asked about the BACD Annual Conference Ferdi responded:

“The BACD Annual Conference is always the highlight of the year for me in terms of dentistry. It is THE event that I get to see all my like-minded colleagues and catch up with them. The conference is not just for learning about the most advanced evidence-based dentistry, but there is a big social component to it which I absolutely enjoy.

“I cannot stress enough how it really is an event not to be missed. Every year when the conference is over, I count down the minutes until the next one!”

With a diverse programme of educational content, wonderful networking opportunities and a chance to connect with the trade as well as colleagues old and new, the BACD Annual Conference is set to be a stand-out in this year’s event calendar – make sure not to miss out!
