In November 2021, the splendour of Edinburgh will be the beautiful backdrop to the next BACD Annual Conference. Dental professionals from across the UK and overseas are invited to celebrate cosmetic dentistry during a three-day educational programme, presented by some of the industry’s most distinguished clinicians. Delegates will be treated to a variety of exciting lectures, seminars and hands-on workshops, covering new trends, innovative ideas and cutting-edge developments for delivering top-quality treatment.
Liverpudlian dentist, Dr Ian Buckle, is among the speakers at the 2021 Annual Conference that are looking forward to sharing their professional insights. Having qualified from Liverpool University in 1985, Dr Buckle has over 35 years’ experience in general practice – both in the private sector and within the NHS. He currently runs a private practice in the picturesque village of Thornton Hough on the Wirral, concentrating on comprehensive reconstructive, aesthetic and implant dentistry. Not only is he a member of the BACD, but also the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), the British Dental Association (BDA) and the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI).
As Director of The Dawson Academy UK, Dr Buckle teaches dentists worldwide the foundations of “Complete Dentistry” as taught by the Academy’s founder, Dr Peter Dawson. He is directly involved with the seminars, study clubs and hands-on courses of the Core Curriculum, providing continuing education to dental professionals across Europe. He also lectures nationally and internationally on functional and aesthetic dentistry, so it’s no wonder that he spends a third of his time as a dental educator and the rest in practice.
Dr Buckle’s passion and infectious enthusiasm for helping other clinicians expand on their clinical skills and knowledge will be invaluable at the BACD Annual Conference. He will be leading an engaging hands-on workshop entitled “A predictable digital workflow for functional smile design”, which will give delegates the chance to explore a modern approach for achieving exceptional treatment outcomes using a combination of digital and analogue processes.
“Patients are used to immediate results and gratification,” says Dr Buckle. “We can use a digital workflow to engage with our patients more effectively and begin with the end in mind. Better communication will often encourage patients to pursue treatments that are less invasive and better for their long-term health and success.
“There are many workflows being promoted for smile design but few, if any, take into consideration how to ensure that the beautiful smile we hope to create is also going be durable and function properly. Analogue workflows have been around for a long time and are very predictable. During my session, I will not only demonstrate how to replicate these successful analogue systems in the digital world, but also how to utilise the benefits that technology offers us to make our systems quicker, cheaper and even more predictable.
“If delegates take one thing away from my session, it should be that digital technology is the key to improving patient communication. Managing patients’ expectations is the most important thing that we do. This is not the only interesting hands-on workshop that delegates can look forward to at the BACD Annual Conference 2021. Other sessions will cover topics ranging from dental photography and guided implant surgery and provisionalisation, to direct resins using the injection technique, restoring posterior worn dentition using composite resin, and composite artistry using the window technique. These outstanding educational opportunities will enable delegates to pick up useful tips and tricks that can be implemented in practice the following Monday morning.
