2020 was an uncertain and unusual year for us all. Many faced worry and illness, while others faced financial uncertainty and restrictions in the way they were required to practice.

Through this difficult year, Dentists’ Provident continued to support their members, proactively responding with great agility to the challenges faced.

At the start of the pandemic when dental professionals were unable to work, Dentists’ Provident acted quickly in helping members adjust to the new reality through a combination of the relaxation of certain terms and conditions, increased flexibility for claimants and providing a discretionary coronavirus support payment to members totalling nearly £1 million.

Giles Kidner, Chairman, said, “It is at times like these that I am reminded more than ever, that the ‘founded by dentists for dental professionals’ is not just a slogan and what it really means to be a member of a mutual society. Our focus now is to ensure that we adapt to the new challenges our profession faces and to continue supporting our members as we have always done.

As you can appreciate during any pandemic, claims relating to infectious diseases rose compared to previous years, however decades of careful planning meant that the business was well placed to weather this unexpected storm.

As in previous years, the statistics again demonstrate that musculoskeletal and psychiatric disorders remain the biggest health challenge for dental professionals, with both areas accounting for about a quarter of the claims paid.
