With a new decade comes a wealth of outstanding educational opportunities provided by the BACD. If there is one event of the dental calendar that aspiring professionals simply cannot afford to miss, it is the highly anticipated BACD Annual Conference. This will take place in November at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), overlooked by the spectacular Edinburgh castle and the historical city that surrounds it. Here, clinicians of all ages and abilities are invited to share their passion for beautiful cosmetic dentistry during three days of thought-provoking lectures, seminars and hands-on courses.

Delegates will be able to experience the dynamic and inclusive BACD community alongside industry leaders, who will be taking the stage to discuss new ideas, explore the latest trends and impart some words of wisdom. Among those that are looking forward to this opportunity is Dr Amanda Seay. She is the owner of a private practice in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, that focuses on comprehensive restorative dentistry. Her expertise ranges from complex restorative treatment planning, to implant or reconstructive dentistry and dental photography.

As a clinical instructor at the world-renowned Kois Center, Dr Seay has also published articles covering the art and techniques of aesthetic dentistry and dental materials. She was named one of the Top 25 Women in Dentistry by DPR in 2012 and is an Accredited Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). She was recently honoured by The Lucy Hobbs Project with the Woman to Watch Award in dentistry, and remains a key opinion leader for several dental companies involved in the beta testing of new products and materials.

Dr Seay will be leading a hands-on session on the first day of the Annual Conference, where she will be looking at ‘Composite artistry utilising the window technique’.

“I will be demonstrating a simple technique that can be utilised to deliver predictable results and can be completed in very little time,” she says. “This is important as we all have different types of practises and how much time we dentists can spend on any given case varies greatly. Proper form and aesthetics can be achieved with this technique, whether for an emergency case that you are squeezing in one day or if you have extra time to do it.

“I think efficiency and simplicity is important, but not at the expense of obtaining proper aesthetics. It is important to have more control over the elements of dental anatomy and layer composite in a planned manner that takes into consideration your own time constraints. If delegates take one thing away from my session, I hope it is that every dentist can perform beautiful composite artistry no matter what type of clinical situation they are in. I want delegates to realise that this process can be fun, rather than stressful.

“Delegates at the BACD Annual Conference can benefit from attending my hands-on session, as I offer advice and guidance on real-world dentistry. I combine techniques that I find give me the most predictable results to treat various different clinical situations.”

As an Accredited Fellow of the AACD, Dr Seay adheres to the highest standards of ethical conduct and responsible patient care. She believes that the BACD shares the AACD’s ethos for promoting clinical excellence and ensuring the best possible value for membership.

“I think the BACD offers top cosmetic dental education delivered by educators from all over the world,” she says. “The hands-on elements of these events are always a huge draw when it comes to aesthetics. I am always amazed at the quality of education and the level of dedication from all the delegates in attendance at BACD events. Moreover, I enjoy seeing the close-knit relationships between Academy members, from the leadership down to the dental students.

“What I am most looking forward to at the BACD Annual Conference is meeting old friends and making new ones. I’m humbled by the opportunity to speak to such a prestigious group of dental professionals and I’m excited for the event in Scotland.”

Dr Seay joins a fantastic speaker line-up of distinguished clinicians that include Professor Daniel Edelhoff, as well as Drs Gurvinder Bhirth, Andrew Chandrapal, Anthony Mak, Ian Buckle, Minesh Patel, Elizabeth Bakeman, Miguel Stanley, Roberto Abundo, Mark Bowes, Howie Gluckman, Chris Orr, Stephan Reinhardt, and Karla Soto.

On the Friday evening of the Annual Conference, dental professionals are welcome to celebrate cosmetic dentistry in style at the National Museum of Scotland. This will be a stunning backdrop to the exclusive, black-tie Gala Dinner, where delegates will have access to explore the museum’s Gallery of rich and diverse artefacts. The Gala Dinner will also provide the chance for delegates to catch up with friends and colleagues and network with leaders from the field.
