In the world of dental implants, the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) provides access to various high calibre learning opportunities for the whole team to enjoy. Most recently, it held the ADI Members’ National Forum 2019 – a full-day educational programme presented exclusively for ADI members. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Royal College of Physicians, London, the event embodied the organisation’s ethos for supporting professionals and raising clinical standards.
A stimulating programme
Up to 7 hours of enhanced CPD were available through 23 stimulating sessions, each delivered by an esteemed ADI member. These included Craig Parker, André C Hattingh, Stephen E B Jones, Geoffrey Pullen, Cemal Ucer, Robert Nichols, Andrew Shelley, Fezaan Gatrad, Wayne Williams, Pavandeep Khaira, Ray McNamara, Andrew T Fish, Irene Amrore, Martin Wanendeya, Emilie Baerts, Jamshaid Manzoor, Yusuf Alshafi, Bill Schaeffer, Jatin Desai, Satheesh Prabhu and Paul John Swanson.
Among the many highlights of the programme was Robert Williams’ session. He shared the results of his own national survey into antibiotic prophylaxis habits among UK dental professionals, highlighting the disparities between individuals and the need for greater consistency. He also discussed the guidelines currently available and suggested that clearer and more comprehensive guidelines are still needed.
Two delegates in the audience were particularly impressed with the session, commenting that: “It’s good to see a younger dentist challenging current ideas and pushing to take professional thinking forward”.
Selvaraj Balaji also presented to a full-house, exploring vertical and horizontal GBR techniques and offering delegates a wealth of practical advice and useful guidance. He was clear that this was not a ‘one size fits all’ area of dentistry and professionals had to find the techniques that worked best for them. After discussing the local factors that influence treatment outcomes, he presented some outstanding cases to illustrate different surgical concepts.
All the speakers were very frank about their topics and many were happy to share their failures as much as their successes. This made for a refreshingly honest learning environment, in which many delegates felt comfortable enough to share their own experiences. Delegates therefore remained highly engaged with the lectures presented and there were plenty of opportunities for discussion during panel sessions throughout the day.

An extended platform for learning
The lecture programme wasn’t the only place that delegates could further their knowledge and abilities. The exhibition showcased some of the latest products and technologies in the dental implant market. An array of manufacturers, suppliers and training providers related to the dental implant field were on hand to offer bespoke information and support to benefit both individuals and businesses. Furthermore, this was the perfect place for individuals to catch up with friends and colleagues, while also meeting new people that share a passion for excellence in dental implantology.
ADI welcomes new era
Amidst the excellent educational and networking opportunities, the ADI took a moment to usher in the next era of the association. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) offered all members a summary of recent organisational activity, while Abid Faqir officially handed over the reins to Eimear O’Connell – the first female ADI President.
Abid described it as “a bitter sweet moment” as he thanked the individuals and ADI team for all their help throughout his presidency. Eimear also humbly expressed her thanks for the support she had received and highlighted some of her aims for the next two years to be about encouraging more female professionals in the field and supporting young dentists.
The new President Elect was announced as Amit Patel, the Honorary Treasurer as Pynadath George and Nikos Donos will be continuing in his post as Academic Representative. The results of this year’s Committee elections were announced as follows:

As the ADI looks ahead to the next two years under new leadership, at least one thing remains the same – the organisation and its members remain dedicated to ensuring excellent dental implant treatment for all patients.
