This year’s OHC, entitled ‘The Generation Gain – Challenges & Opportunities’, is taking place in Newport on the 22 – 23 November at the ICC Wales – a stunning new event space that has taken inspiration from some of the world’s best convention centres. So, what can you look forward to by registering to attend?
A schedule brimming with opportunity
At the heart of this year’s OHC is a number of fantastic lectures. These have been specifically chosen to cover a wide array of pertinent topics as well as give delegates insight into how their profession can help on a clinical level as well as covering more general information that can be applied to all aspects of work life.
For example, following the President’s welcome on the first morning of the OHC, Professor Iain Chapple will be hosting a lecture titled ‘Death by co-morbidity – the role of periodontitis’. This is set to be a deeply insightful look into the more clinical side of things and the effects that periodontitis can have on health.
Following this, delegates will have the opportunity to curate which sessions they attend as the rest of the day will be formed of multiple parallel sessions. This means you can choose the topics that interest you most so that you can have a more personalised learning experience. Examples of some of the lectures included in these parallel sessions include sessions on cleft lip and palate care, a guide to peri-implantitis and exploring whether dementia rates can be improved through better oral health. There are also sessions which focus more on personality and approaches to patients, such as one that will delve into how to use compassion as a tool for resilience.
Ending the educational sessions of the day will be a lecture hosted by Professor David Bartlett entitled ‘Recognising erosive tooth wear and what to do about it’ – perfect for delegates who want to learn how to identify when enamel is weak or depleted and what they can do for patients in this situation.
The second day of the programme is also jam-packed with exciting educational opportunities. Once again delegates will have the opportunity to curate their own lecture programme for most of the day by choosing between a wide array of parallel sessions. Topics include a focus on the future of oral health in Wales, the role of the oral microbiome in health and disease and a practical guide on the management of implant patients among many others.
The programme then closes with a lecture on the applications of bioactive glass in oral healthcare, led by Professor Robert Hill, and comments from Julie Deverick, President of the BSDHT.
All of these sessions follow the theme of the Generation Gain – basically, learning to treat patients from across different generations in what is fast becoming the most multi-generational society the UK has ever experienced. There is also the chance for delegates to earn 11 hours of Enhanced CPD by attending these lectures over the two days!
Amongst this core programme there are also sponsored breakfast workshops and sponsored symposiums supported by some of the amazing brands that will be present in the exhibition at the OHC this year – definitely worth checking out if you want to gain some further insights!
Get your research seen by peers
Have you got research that you want to share with your colleagues? Why not enter the annual poster competition? This yearly competition is a great opportunity for you to showcase your findings and share your insights with likeminded individuals. There are also prizes up for grabs for the best posters, and the best entries will be published in Dental Health – the BSDHT’s clinical journal.
Posters will be judged by a scientific committee and prizes will be awarded at the President’s reception. Poster submission is open until September 13.

An exciting exhibition and chances to network
While broadening your knowledge, the OHC is also the ideal chance to get up to date with the latest news and products from some of the leading companies in the industry. The famous treasure hunt will be making a comeback this year (individual prizes from last year reached up to a value of £800!) and the exhibition makes for a wonderful way to spend time between lectures so you can discover new ways to further improve your protocols and your job satisfaction.
On the evening of Friday 22 there is also a dinner and dance, which will allow delegates to let their hair down, mix, mingle and dance the night away in the stunning surroundings of the Coldra Court Hotel – a beautiful hotel in the Welsh countryside. Tickets to this evening event are priced at £55.
Registration fees
Early-bird registration fees for attendance to the OHC are available until the 9 September. For BSDHT members this is priced at £245 (£128 one day attendance). For non-members the Early-bird fee is priced at £370 (£196 for one day attendance).
Past this deadline, tickets are priced at £335 (£174 for one day attendance, £355 on site attendance). Non-members can attend for £481 (£254 for one day attendance, £501 on site attendance).
As per the last few years, the BSDHT is also currently running a discount rate for BSDHT student members and those who are new to the profession. Individuals who qualified in 2017, 2018 or 2019 are eligible to register at less than 40% of the standard member rate, with prices starting at just £49.
