The field of dental implantology continues to gain momentum in the UK as patient demand rises and innovative products and techniques improve treatment results. At the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show in May, the Implant & Advanced Dental Education Theatre featured an array of sessions offering insight into the very latest ideas, systems and technologies in the field.
Richard Moore and Sami Stagnell considered the benefits of piezoelectric technology in the management of implant surgery. With modern solutions making procedures quicker and simpler while helping to preserve both the soft and hard tissue, they explored the selection criteria for piezo surgery. They demonstrated how they use the Piezotome Cube from Acteon for superior surgical results, offering practical tips to help delegates achieve the same.

On Saturday, Dev Patel attempted to help anyone currently unsure about entering the dental implant world make an informed decision. Sponsored by UCLan, the interactive session encouraged delegates to really think about the subjects presented. Dev showed clinical cases to highlight the importance of the restorative process – after all, it’s not just about the implant and the surgical procedure! The various indications for dental implants were discussed, with Dev stating that “true levels of success are if our restorations outlive our patients”. He outlined the various training available to delegates as well, encouraging all to seek quality tuition and mentoring.
Jordan, and NCL student and delegate, said:
“This session provided good insight into the full treatment aspects for implant dentistry and a good overview of the courses available at UCLan.”
Adam Nulty then shared with delegates how he “learned to stop worrying and love digital dentistry”. Advocating digital as the present and future of dentistry, he introduced the IDDA (International Digital Dentistry Academy), which now has more than 10,000 members. He went on to demonstrate the many benefits of guided implant surgery, for which he utilises cutting-edge technologies from Carestream Dental. Covering everything from digital smile design to minimal preparations, intraoral scanning, patient communication and digital photography, Adam’s session was both hilarious and illuminative, offering a useful insight into all things digital.
Having attended the lecture, principal dentist of Chepstow Dental Care Siân Jones commented:
“The lecture was informative and entertaining. It provided a good overview of the use of digital treatment planning that will help me in practice.”
With continued innovation in the field of dental implants, it’s exciting to think about what will be possible for patients even in the near future. The Implant & Advanced Theatre at the British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show provided a great taster of what may yet be to come.
