The growth in dental implants is a regularly reported topic within the UK dental profession. The ability for clinicians to deliver a safe and effective solution to partial or complete edentulism allows them to meet the ever-rising demands of their patients. However, there is no clear-cut pathway into dental implantology for UK dentists, or indeed any other members of the team. As such, careful navigation across the field is required in order to acquire and maintain the necessary skills and experience to satisfy GDC regulations and provide treatment with competence.

This, of course, begins with quality training. Dental professionals are therefore charged with researching the market for qualified training providers who can offer quality-assured teaching in the dental implant arena, while also facilitating the development of the required knowledge and clinical skills.

An accredited PG Cert qualification

Ucer Education offers dentists a comprehensive programme of a PG Cert qualification in dental implantology through the Manchester Dental Implant Clinic at ICE Hospital and Postgraduate Dental Institute in Salford Quays. It is a stand-alone qualification in surgical and prosthodontic aspects of dental implantology accredited by Eduqual at Level 7. PG Cert can also be used as a stepping stone towards an MSc in Dental Implantology, or it is indeed perfect for any clinicians looking to get up-to-date with the latest research in the field while honing their skills alongside highly experienced lecturers and mentors, gaining a quality-assured qualification.

The course is run over 12 months, with 12 days of lectures evenly spread throughout the year on a one day a month basis. It fulfils all the requirements of the GDC / FDGPUK Training Standards in Implant Dentistry (TSID, 2016) and supports the FGDPUK’s Standards in Implant Dentistry which is currently being developed.

Training and NEBDN qualifications in dental implantology are also available to dental nurses looking to enhance their capabilities in the field and advance in their careers with a national qualification.

In a class of its own

Ucer Education is led by Professor Cemal Ucer BDS, MSc, PhD. FDTFEd. – a  highly regarded Specialist Oral Surgeon with more than two decades of training experience in dental implantology, Professor Ucer is a renowned authority in the sector. He is Professor and Clinical Lead of the MSc programme in Dental Implantology and a Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and a member of the Faculty of Examiners of the RCSEd Diploma in Implant Dentistry. He is the lead for the working group developing the new Standards in Implant Dentistry for the FGDP(UK). Professor Ucer is also a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology and a Past President of the Association of Dental Implantology, altogether demonstrating his ability to set the standards in implant education and deliver professional training in a class of its own.

Aside from the outstanding calibre of the lecturers, the Ucer Education PG Cert in dental implantology demonstrates many features that set it apart from other training courses. Firstly, mentorship is available from experienced and trained clinicians to support delegates throughout the course. The course faculty includes specialists and consultants from the UK and abroad who are world-renowned experts in their own fields.

The training itself provides a core knowledge base in surgical and restorative implant dentistry, as well as practical experience with high quality and clinically evidenced implant systems including the use of Neoss, MegaGen and TRI (swiss). Course content covers the complete digital workflow including interpretation of CBCT scans, use of intraoral scanners (3Shape and Cerec), 3D planning using Implant Studio and Navident real-time surgical navigation, as well as 3D printing and fully guided surgery. Delegates focus on the fundamental learning objectives, which include everything from patient assessment to treatment planning, as well as basic and advanced hard and soft tissue management techniques. The course provides preparation to sit the prestigious Diploma in Implant Dentistry examination of the RCSEd.

All of this takes place in one of Europe’s most advanced training environments, which offers state-of the art facilities and equipment – the ICE Hospital in Manchester. With seven surgeries, a dental laboratory, a fully equipped operating theatre and day care surgery facilities, the ICE Hospital offers a dedicated team of two consultant anaesthetists and an appropriate team of medical staff and nurses. There is also a diagnostic centre featuring a Morita CBCT machine and various technologies supporting the complete digital workflow such as Trios and Cerec intraoral scanners, 3D printers and 3Shape treatment planning software. The clinical settings are complemented perfectly by interactive lecture rooms that feature high quality conference and webinar facilities to enable live streaming of surgical procedures from the in-house surgeries for observation and teaching opportunities.

Julian Caplan, Principal of Aviva Dentistry, BACD Accredited dentist and President of The Digital Dentistry School, recently completed the course and commented:

“The course content covered all the current knowledge required for simple to advanced implant treatment planning, with well organised lecturers. The lecturers were engaging and sometimes challenging, which created an excellent learning environment for delegates. All the lecturers and supporting staff were very approachable and would always try to help whenever it was required. The training certainly delivered on all aspects of a PG Cert in Implant Dentistry course that I was expecting and looking for. Having successfully completed the course, I now have a formal qualification in implantology, which gives me confidence to continue developing my skills and experience in the area.

“This course is ideal for both dentists who are starting out in implant dentistry and those who already have experience but are seeking validation for the techniques the they are using in their practice. I would absolutely recommend it.”

Develop your dental implant portfolio under the supervision of highly respected and experienced clinicians in the field, ultimately gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry of the RCSEd on completing a portfolio of cases after finishing this course.
