The Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) will be holding its highly anticipated biennial Team Congress in May 2019. Entitled “Shaping the Future of Dental Implantology: Techniques – Technology – Teamwork”, the event will provide an outstanding educational programme with up to 19.5 hours of verifiable CPD, as well as various opportunities to network and have fun with friends and colleagues.
Lyndon Cooper from the USA will be among the exceptional speaker line-up in the plenary programme. He is the Associate Dean for Research and Head of the Department of Oral Biology at the University of Illinois School of Dentistry, Chicago. Lyndon is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and has previously served as Stallings Distinguished Professor of Dentistry and Director of Graduate Prosthodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has received various accolades throughout his career so far, including the American College of Prosthodontists’ Clinician/Researcher Award 2004; the IADR 2009 Distinguished Scientist Award for Prosthodontics and Implantology; the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontists’ Schweitzer Award for Research; and the recent IADR/AO Osseointegration Innovation in Implant Science Award.
Lyndon will be sharing his expertise by presenting a seminar entitled “Comprehensive Therapies for Single Tooth Replacement: What is Enough?” at the ADI Team Congress. He will explore just what it takes to deliver outstanding aesthetics and durable results when approaching single tooth replacement cases.
“Aesthetics is a driving force in dentistry right now,” he said. “It is also one of the main challenges in a wide range of cases. Simple errors in the planning and/or execution of treatment can cause aesthetic challenges that may not easily be overcome.
“Longevity of treatment outcomes is another challenge that needs to be conquered. Through carefully controlled research, we are learning more about what the long-term risks of dental implantology are, as well as how we can prevent them and manage them. Peri-implantitis is a particularly topical example of a potential issue faced when placing any number of dental implants in a patient’s mouth. In addition, the unanticipated movement of teeth adjacent to dental implants can prove challenging as well.
“Precision planning is key to avoiding and overcoming these challenges, and use of digital technology is crucial. However, precise execution is equally as important and techniques such as guided surgery can help. So can the use of CAD/CAM abutments and patient-specific protocols, as these may assist in providing reproducible excellence across various fields of restorative dentistry.”
Lyndon’s lecture will cover how the anatomy affects the success of dental implant placement and the benefits often afforded by soft tissue augmentation procedures. He will also consider how the design of the abutment can impact aesthetics of the final restoration, offering delegates practical advice on how to manage cemented restorations and ensure effective crown selection. When discussing what he hopes delegates will take away from his session, Lyndon commented:
“I hope professionals will go away with the adage of ‘measure twice, cut once’ fresh in their minds. Most of our problems arise from poor planning and insufficient diagnostic information. I will show delegates the minimal amount of information required and how simple protocols for planning of single tooth dental implants can assist them in achieving replicable excellence in dental implant therapy.”
The ADI Team Congress 2019 will be held on 2-4 May at the EICC, Edinburgh. The plenary programme will host an array of speakers from around the world. Lyndon added:
