I’VE been quite busy lately – I was in Glasgow recently for the BDA Scottish Conference where BADN had a stand, then Edinburgh later the same day for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh DCP Advisory Board meeting, and then I found myself in Carlisle in the evening for a 60th birthday party!

BADN also had a stand at the British Orthodontic Conference at the QEII Centre in London on 27-29 September; I was there on the Thursday and Friday and President-Elect, Jacqui Elsden, attended on the Saturday of the event.

Coming up very soon there’s BDIA Dental Showcase at ExCel London on 4-6 October (see page 10) – come along and meet President Hazel Coey, President- Elect Jacqui Elsden, Adam and myself; and then, of course, the National Dental Nursing Conference at the Grand Hotel, Blackpool on 16-17 November.

National Dental Nursing Conference

The Conference will be opened by Deputy Chief Dental Officer, England, Eric Rooney, and the programme over the two days is varied, with something for everyone:

Friday 16 November:

Opening Ceremony 13.00-13.30

Counterfeiting 13.30-14.30

Swallows Neck and Cancer 14.30-15.30

Alcohol Awareness 15.45-16.45

BADN AGM (members only) 16.45-17.30

Optional informal Dinner at 12 Restaurant 19.30

Saturday 17 November:

Sepsis 09.30-10.30

All I Want for Christmas 10.45-11.45

Pride in Practice 11.45-12.45

Communities in Practice 14.00-15.00

GDC 15.00-16.00

Closing Ceremony and Coffee 16.00

Conference fees start at £35 for the Friday and £45 for the Saturday (less if you attend both days!) and include lunch and refreshments. All members of the dental team are welcome, members and non-members (although there is a discounted fee for BADN members).

Just go to www.badn.org.uk/conference, print off the reservation form, complete it and post it to the BADN office with your cheque or credit card details. There is also a special conference B&B rate available to delegates at the Grand Hotel in Blackpool(formerly the Blackpool Hilton).

BADN Long Serving badges

At the Closing Ceremony, President Hazel Coey will be presenting the BADN Awards and also – new this year – long service badges to long-standing members. Dental nurses who joined the Association in 1993 (or earlier), 1998 or 2003 will have been contacted already with instructions on how to apply for their 25, 20 or 15 year badges (if you haven’t, please contact Val at val@badn.org.uk); those who joined in 2008 or 2013 are also invited to contact Val for more information. Of course, you have to be a current member to receive a badge!

All I want for Christmas

And on 1 December, BADN will again be helping out at the All I Want for Christmas oral health day in Blackpool for the homeless, those in recovery and other vulnerable groups. The day is organised and funded by Horizon Blackpool, mobile dental surgery provided by Dentaid, literature by the Oral Health Foundation and BADN are looking for volunteer dental nurses to assist and to provide OHE qualification. If you are a dental nurse interested in helping on the day, contact me at pam@badn.org.uk.

I hope to see you at least one of the above events!
