The British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT) has paid tribute to outgoing President Debbie Hemington, recognising her outstanding contribution to the Association and her longstanding commitment to advancing the dental therapy profession.
Debbie steps down following five years as President, having previously served as Chair from 2018 to 2021. Her dedication to BADT stretches back much further, having joined the Association shortly after qualifying as a dental therapist in 1983.

With over 40 years of experience in dentistry, Debbie has been a passionate advocate for dental therapists throughout her career. Qualifying from the New Cross School of Dental Therapy as its final graduate, she has witnessed significant changes in the profession and has played an important role in championing its development, recognition and opportunities.
Alongside her clinical career, Debbie has made a substantial contribution to dental education. Since joining the Eastman Dental Hospital as a tutor in 2003, she has been involved in educating and supporting generations of dental professionals, combining her teaching commitments with extensive experience across general practice, community and hospital dentistry.
During her time in BADT leadership, Debbie has worked tirelessly to ensure that dental therapists and dental hygienists have a voice in the discussions and decisions shaping their profession. Her work has included advocating for the full utilisation of dental therapists’ skills, supporting developments in scope of practice, contributing to national conversations around NHS dentistry and workforce reform, and strengthening relationships with professional and regulatory organisations.
Debbie’s contribution has been recognised beyond the Association, including being named among dentistry’s 50 most influential people and being awarded Fellowship of the College of General Dentistry.
Throughout her presidency, Debbie has remained a committed and approachable advocate for the profession, generously giving her time, experience and expertise to support both colleagues and the next generation of dental therapists.
BADT extends its sincere thanks to Debbie for her exceptional dedication, leadership and service. Her contribution has made a lasting difference to the Association and the wider profession.
Although stepping down as President, Debbie will continue to support BADT as Immediate Past President for a further two-year term, ensuring that her considerable knowledge and experience remain available to the Association.

The Association is also pleased to announce the appointment of Joanne Bowles as its new President, following her previous service as Chair. Joanne brings extensive experience in dental education and professional leadership and will continue to champion the interests of dental therapists and hygienists across the UK.
Speaking about her appointment and paying tribute to her predecessor, Joanne said:
“Debbie, on behalf of the dental therapy community, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks for your dedication, leadership and invaluable contribution to our profession. As I step into this role, I look forward to building on the foundations you have laid and I will continue to champion the value, the growth, the recognition and future of dental therapy. Thank you for your commitment and the legacy you leave behind.”

Joining Joanne on the Executive Council are Lauren Long as Chair, Robert Leigh as Secretary and Clare Burton as Treasurer.
Together, the new Executive Council looks forward to building on the work of its predecessors, continuing to strengthen professional representation, supporting members and advocating for the recognition and full utilisation of dental therapists and dental hygienists within the wider dental team.
BADT wishes to express its particular gratitude to Debbie for everything she has contributed over so many years and looks forward to continuing to benefit from her involvement in this next chapter.
