Dentistry as a profession is based on ethical and clinical responsibility, as well as patient-centric care to accommodate their unique needs. This is why prevention-first dentistry is so important: it directs patients away from quick fixes and instead focuses on how to reduce the risk of oral diseases in the first place.

At the heart of this approach is a consistent oral hygiene routine, chiefly daily toothbrushing and interdental cleaning. Maintaining a healthy oral microbiome prevents plaque build-up and the subsequently heightened risk of caries and periodontitis – but motivating patients to cooperate is reliant on improving their understanding what optimal brushing and interdental cleaning techniques look like.

This is where the iTOP programme from Curaden helps. Transforming the way your patients perceive their oral health, an iTOP workshop is more than just a seminar; it’s an opportunity to reignite your passion for oral hygiene education. You will gain valuable insights into new tools and techniques that will not only improve your patients’ oral health but also enhance their overall well-being. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or a recent graduate, iTOP seminars provide a unique chance to expand your knowledge, refine your clinical skills, and truly make a lasting impact on your patients’ oral health. iTOP will reshape the way you approach patient care and elevate your practice to new heights.

What learnings will I take away from iTOP courses?

Created by Dr Jiří Sedelmayer, iTOP (Individually Trained Oral Prophylaxis) is an innovative, systematic approach that focuses on mastering biofilm management to optimise oral health. iTOP is a practical journey designed to teach dental professionals worldwide how to transform oral hygiene practices and effectively coach patients toward lifelong habits. The unique Touch 2 Teach methodology empowers you to deliver collaborative, patient-centered education. This approach sharpens your skills in biofilm control and levels up your ability to motivate patients to improve their oral care behaviours. This ultimately drives better patient outcomes and long-term success.

There are currently 3 different iTOP seminars on offer from Curaden UK:

iTOP Introductory Course: 1 day – 6.5 hours CPD

  • Introduces delegates to the iTOP philosophy and principles for improved oral health, both personally and for patients. Discuss the iTOP philosophy for the prevention of oral diseases and how to apply learning and personality styles to the daily challenge of biofilm control in relation to periodontal health and inflammation. Delegates will practice individualised effective biofilm disruption using a variety of brushes and will be able to develop a strategy to implement the iTOP philosophy and principles into daily clinical practice for better patient outcomes.

iTOP Implant Introductory Course: 1 day – 6.5 hours CPD

  • For all dental professionals who provide dental care for patients with dental implants. Discuss the iTOP philosophy for the prevention of peri-implant diseases and review the current guidance, facts and figures relating to peri-implant health and diseases. Apply an individual approach to homecare routines specific to the patients’ needs and personality type and evaluate different techniques and tools for dental implant homecare.

iTOP Advanced Course: 2 days (residential): 9.5 hours CPD

Provides delegates with the opportunity to refine their practical skills in biofilm management using a variety of oral hygiene products from the Curaprox range, building on the iTOP Introductory techniques. There is also the opportunity to learn psychological strategies and behaviour change techniques to enhance patient communication, education and motivation to ensure lifelong oral health.

Dr Claire McCarthy, clinical teacher and research fellow at KCL, commented:

“One of the key things to take away is that oral hygiene instruction is multi-faceted, with so many things to take into consideration. It is important to think of how to do things and why to do things… there is so much behavioural psychology and it is very educational, weaving in evidence-based research. I’ve learned a lot.”
