HYROX training and orthodontics may initially appear unrelated. One emphasises physical endurance, strength, and performance under fatigue; the other requires precision planning and clinical expertise. Yet, the principles of structured development and progressive improvement create a significant overlap.
Through a structured HYROX personal training programme with my trainer, Joe Massaro (@strength_movement_concierge), I have experienced personal growth far beyond physical fitness. Joe’s expertise ensures that every session is tailored, progressive, and purposeful, emphasising discipline, accountability, and long-term planning. These sessions challenge both body and mind, reinforcing resilience and self-efficacy – qualities that translate directly into professional growth within orthodontics.
The same skills developed through HYROX training – consistency, goal-setting and performing under pressure – are critical in clinical practice. Whether planning complex cases, delivering treatment with precision, or stepping into leadership and teaching roles, the confidence cultivated through disciplined training enhances professional performance.
In the IAS Academy courses that I have completed, we apply these same principles of structured, evidence-based development. Just as Joe Massaro turns physical effort into measurable performance gains, IAS Academy’s tailored education transforms clinical ambition into competence, confidence and professional progression. Integrating lessons from high-performance training into professional life demonstrates that confidence and resilience are built – not innate – and that intentional development, whether physical or clinical, is key to achieving excellence.
Through both personal training and professional development in dentistry, it’s imperative that you take a long-term view for achievable, but aspirational, ambitions. This then defines the steps that you must take to reach them, helping to guide you at every step of your development.
My coach had encouraged me to train to the point of completing one HYROX event, and the training for that gave me the confidence to compete in four further solo events, achieving results including ranking 4th in my age group on the day of my latest competition. Each training session and event encourages focus and further fuels the desire to be the best version of myself.
The same can appear in orthodontic care; taking the time to complete focused courses can encourage further learning, which then improves the care provided to patients. With IAS Academy, the support received from tutors and mentors has enabled me to take on complex orthodontic cases, ensuring patients have effective functional and aesthetic outcomes.
This support has also been reflected in my sporting endeavours, with IAS Academy and my practice principles all sponsoring me at HYROX events, showing their support in me.
Encouragement in professional endeavours begins with other members of the dental team, including dental nurses, or practice principals, and continues with mentors in post-graduate training. In orthodontic care in particular, this support can come with clinicians referring patients to you so that your skills are routinely practised and developed. This sense of community can be found from clinicians within your own practice, or professionals you meet at training courses or wider industry events.
At the IAS Academy, this support has come with mentors who provide advice and insights on the cases I perform, and having a second opinion can be really helpful. Tutors on the courses also ensure you learn actionable techniques, which give you confidence immediately upon returning to the practice.
