Dr Arti Shah qualified in 2003 and harbours a special love for Invisalign treatments, having delivered them for over 15 years. Tackling a range of cases with varying complexity, Dr Shah helps her patients achieve the smile they have always wanted.

However, as a practising dentist, Dr Shah has observed first-hand the unique challenges that come with being a woman in dentistry, and why The Female Dentist is primed to tackle them:

“What was once a male-dominated field has evolved to welcome more female practitioners each year – with women now representing over 50% of dental school graduates in many countries. Despite these positive trends in representation, challenges persist for women, such as:

  • Facing wage disparities compared to male counterparts
  • Underrepresentation in dental leadership positions and specialty fields
  • Navigating the complex balance of clinical practice with family responsibilities
  • Unconscious bias and gendered expectations, impacting everything from patient interactions to professional advancement

These realities don’t diminish the progress made, but they highlight why supportive professional communities like The Female Dentist remain essential.

“I joined The Female Dentist as a Board Member as it’s an organisation dedicated to advancing women in dentistry. There are many benefits to becoming part of this network, including the mentorship opportunities that address the specific challenges we face as women in dentistry. Having access to experienced women dental professionals – who have successfully navigated similar career paths – provides invaluable guidance that general dental associations may not typically address.

“There’s unique value in sharing experiences with colleagues who understand the specific intersection of gender and professional identity. The Female Dentist creates spaces where we can discuss challenges openly, celebrate achievements, and build meaningful connections that combat the isolation sometimes felt in practice settings.

“Collective advocacy is powerful. The Female Dentist helps amplify our voices on issues ranging from workplace policies to broader industry practices. By joining forces with like-minded professionals through The Female Dentist, I can contribute to positive change that benefits not just women dentists, but the profession as a whole. With targeted leadership training and opportunities, we can address the persistent gender gap in dental leadership and better position ourselves to pursue leadership roles.

“Along with personal advancement, joining The Female Dentist unites women in this professional community to:

  • Create more visible role models for the next generation
  • Contribute to research on gender-specific issues in dental practice
  • Help shape policies that make dentistry more equitable for everyone
  • Strengthen the profession by ensuring diverse perspectives inform its future

“By joining The Female Dentist, I’m not just investing in my own professional development – I’m becoming part of a larger movement toward a more inclusive profession. The challenges facing women in dentistry aren’t insurmountable, but addressing them requires intentional commitment and collective action.

“As I move forward in my career, I’m excited to connect with colleagues who share a vision for meaningful change in our profession, creating a dental landscape where success isn’t influenced by gender but by passion, skill, and dedication to patient care.

The future of dentistry is stronger when all voices are represented, and I’m proud to take this step towards ensuring women’s contributions continue to shape and strengthen our field.”
