The dental community is celebrating the news that Sara Hurley, a figure synonymous with transformative leadership in oral health, has been awarded a CBE in the recent King’s Birthday Honours list. This prestigious recognition acknowledges the former Chief Dental Officer, England’s profound and sustained impact on dental care and policy over a distinguished career spanning three and a half decades.

Sara Hurley’s career has been marked by a relentless dedication to improving oral health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations. Her strategic vision and collaborative approach have been instrumental in shaping national dental initiatives and advocating for patient-centric care.

Responding to the announcement, Sara Hurley expressed her profound gratitude and humility. “I’m truly honoured — and deeply humbled — by this recognition,” she stated. Emphasising the collective effort behind her achievements, she added, “It’s never about one individual. This award reflects the efforts of so many talented and committed people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside for the past three and a half decades — clinicians, policymakers, educators, and advocates — all striving to improve oral health, especially for those too often left behind.”

Hurley highlighted her role in fostering connections and driving change: “I’ve simply had the opportunity to connect the dots, challenge the status quo, and ensure patients remain at the heart of the conversation. This honour is a testament to their collective effort, and I’m proud to share it with them.”

Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledged the challenges and the vital support received: “The path hasn’t always been straightforward — but it’s been shaped by the resilience built through challenge, the strength of trusted relationships, and the support of true allies who believe in the future of dental care and oral health.”

Looking ahead, Hurley reaffirmed her ongoing commitment to the field. “We’ve come a long way — and there’s still much more to do, together. Now working across a broader oral health portfolio, I remain committed to challenging orthodoxy — and to keeping patients at the centre of everything I do.”

The CBE is a fitting tribute to Sara Hurley’s tireless dedication and her enduring legacy in advancing oral health for all. The Probe extends its warmest congratulations on this well-deserved honour.
