Due to the high-risk nature of the profession, dental practitioners must be compliant with all regulations. From secure record-keeping of patient information to managing decontamination and waste protocols, adhering to the guidelines ensures a smooth and safe daily workflow, maintaining the reputation of the practice and avoiding litigation.
Bilkis Hussain is Head of Compliance at Apolline and has many years of experience managing successful dental practices and removing the stress of a CQC inspection. Her first-hand knowledge of dental regulations is invaluable for dental practices. Observing some of the challenges in compliancy, Bilkis notes:
“Staying ahead of the evolving regulations can be difficult. Between balancing clinical responsibilities, marketing, filling the appointment diary up and more, practices may struggle to keep their policies up to date. Without a firm understanding of the latest changes, inspections can be daunting. Knowing things like the correct record-keeping and risk assessment protocols can ensure practices are not just ready, but that they are working in a streamlined way.
“There are always changes in the compliance landscape. Recently, a greater emphasis has been placed on patient safety, data protection, record-keeping and infection control. Regulators have become more rigorous in their inspection too, which is why it is crucial for practices to adopt a proactive, rather than a reactive, approach.”
To better prepare dental practices for regulatory inspections, Bilkis will be presenting a talk at the ADI Team Congress 2025. Entitled, “Compliance Confidence: Steer Clear of the Top Pitfalls,” the session will be a first-class opportunity for all dental professionals to expand their regulatory knowledge for a more streamlined workflow. Bilkis sets the stage for her talk:
“I will address how to identify the common compliance pitfalls and the actions and strategies you should take to avoid them. I have done many due diligences and visited hundreds of practices, so I will use real world scenarios to illustrate some of the challenges. I hope to highlight how the daily workflow can be enhanced when these pitfalls are avoided, improving the outcome for the entire team and reducing stress and anxiety over any upcoming inspections.
“The talk will be for all, from practice managers to dentists, dental therapists and dental nurses. The aim is for attendees to leave with a clearer grasp of compliance requirements. This should give them the confidence to implement changes effectively, empowering their daily practice for an all-round safer environment.”
For 2025, the ADI Team Congress will take place at The Brighton Centre on 1-3 May. This year’s theme is the “Implant Aesthetic Kaleidoscope”, speaking to the colourful range of opportunities for the entire dental team. For Bilkis, this will be her first in attendance, something she is looking forward to:
“I am excited to be a part of this unique platform. I first encountered the ADI when a colleague introduced me to Linzy Barker, the association’s representative for dental care professionals. Through this, I gained a great insight into the ADI and have been able to speak at the Team Congress. As an event, it is a cornerstone for all dental professionals with an interest in implantology. The networking opportunities are endless and attendees are able to share their experiences with their peers and receive guidance in their work. Moreover, there is such a broad spectrum in the lectures that there is something for everyone. I hope my talk contributes to this and offers a new angle from which to look at implantology, ensuring that safe treatments will be delivered for all.”
Bilkis’ focus on dental compliance is unique among the bustling timetable of talks at the ADI Team Congress, making it an essential educational opportunity. Elsewhere, attendees of the three-day event will be able to see many more industry experts in action, each offering a comprehensive session for how to improve the way implant treatments are delivered.
Adjacent to the lectures will be a series of hands-on workshops. These are a brilliant way of receiving expert guidance on the latest tools, techniques and developments in implantology whilst learning in a sociable, interactive environment. By blending a practical and theoretical learning approach and supporting it with exciting social events, the Team Congress makes sure that attendees will come away with a richer understanding of implants whilst having fun at the same time. Don’t miss out on the many benefits and book your place at the ADI Team Congress today.
