Shalini Kanagasingam is the course lead for the MSc Endodontology programme at UCLan, and a consultant at the Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Denmark Hill. She will be presenting a session entitled “Using CBCT to plan your cases” as part of the Early Career Group Symposium at the IFEA World Endodontic Congress (WEC) in Glasgow this September. Shalini shares a little more about herself and her upcoming session:
“My days are spent teaching undergraduate and postgraduate dental students as well as providing endodontic care on a referral basis at UCLan. I also carry out research in various endodontic topics but my current PhD research focusses on the relationship between oral biofilm and Alzheimer’s Disease.
“I’ll be presenting at the Early Careers Symposium along with a group of my colleagues. This symposium is really important for anyone who is just starting out in endodontics. Whether you’re in general practice and you want to establish yourself and undertake some more moderate to complex cases, or if you’ve just completed your training in endodontics, this is a really good forum to attend. You’ll meet lots of colleagues who are at the same stages of their careers as you, and the speakers are very approachable and have an understanding of what you’re going through. This is a really great place to come and ask questions and share your experiences with us.
“I will be presenting on the use of CBCT in planning your cases, which will not come as a surprise to a lot of us who are doing a lot of endo. CBCT has really changed the way we manage our cases, and has impacted every aspect of my clinical decision making. It has also been a great tool for me to educate patients when discussing the various treatment options. During my presentation, I will highlight some of the clinical aspects of how CBCT has helped me to treat and better manage cases, even in terms of diagnostics. We’ve all come across cases where we’re stumped with only the clinical presentation and 2D images as references, and I will discuss the ways in which CBCT has helped me to produce a more accurate diagnosis and communicate this to patients. CBCT is particularly useful in tricky cases – like root resorption and dental trauma, for example – enabling me to optimise my management of such cases. I hope you’ll come along to my session and I look forward to meeting you at IFEA, Glasgow.
“Even though I am attending the IFEA WEC as a speaker, I am looking forward to attending a lot of the educational sessions and pre-congress workshops myself. Professor William McLean and his team at the British Endodontic Society have done an amazing job of bringing together the best endodontists, clinicians, and researchers to Glasgow to present their sessions. It’s going to be a very friendly environment, conducive to networking and facilitating the social programme as well. I think this is the best time to strengthen friendships and make new connections – there’s no better place for this than IFEA, Glasgow.”
