Amalgam use was the most “controversial topic” at the Minamata Convention last autumn, and it only felt right that it was given centre stage in ‘The Big Amalgam Debate: What is the truth currently?’ at the BDIA Dental Showcase.

Interim Chief Dental Officer England, Jason Wong and Past President of the BACD and Director / Co-Founder of Real Dentist Academy, Chris McConnell joined Edmund Proffitt, Chief Executive of the BDIA, as they delved into the implications of a potential amalgam phase-out or phase-down.

Jason emphasised the need for further research into the environmental impacts of amalgam alternatives. “There is insufficient research for us to move from one material, when you have not done the research on the other,” he said, asserting that England’s position would not be affected by the EU, but will be driven by the environmental considerations.

Chris delved into the clinical alternatives to amalgam, proposing an increased use of bulk fill composites as an effective replacement for a variety of needs.

Delegate Ian Mills of Torrington Dental Practice said:

“I really enjoyed it, it was informative. The speakers complemented each other and covered a good range of political and clinical points.”
